County medical society holds inaugural event

Dr. Jay P. Cannon was installed as the 107th president of the Oklahoma County Medical Society on Feb. 3. He was honoree at a dinner at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, and 250 guests attended the party.
Dr. Greg Parker and the Shadowman Blues Project provided entertainment.
Rosalie Rahe was inaugural dinner chairman.
Dr. Ronald O. Gilcher received the Dr. Don F. Rhinehart Medical Service Award. Gilcher retired recently after 27 years at Oklahoma Blood Institute. He was president, chief executive and medical director.

THIRD TIME’S CHARM
Junior League President Betsy Mantor scheduled a celebration to honor newly nominated 2008-09 league President Laura Ogle and 2007-08 President Kara Wallace and the incoming board of directors. She sent invitations three times and postponed the event twice because of wintry weather.
When the group finally met Jan. 30, group members celebrated with champagne.
On the board are Nominating Chairman Jill Greene, Administrative Vice President Melba Frazier, Bylaws Chairman Amy Bankhead, Communications Vice President D.J. Thompson, Community Vice President Mei Cheng, Finance Vice President Samonia Pope, Fundraising Vice President Lisa McConnell, Membership Vice President Connie Nowell, Strategic Planning Chairman Joyell Haave, and sustaining adviser Lee Ann Nordin.
Guests included Myrla Pierson, Beth Kerr, Jennifer Kerr, Kim Kakish, Ann-Clore Duncan, Sally Bentley, Katie James and Nancy Greer.
TAKE A BOW
Four Oklahoma City University Award of Excellence winners were honored at a cocktail party and reception in Jim Vallion’s home Jan. 31. Vallion and Joan Gilmore were hosts. The women, all outstanding cultural and civic leaders, Kay Goebel, Lois Salmeron, Rita Moore and Martha Burger, met with committee personnel and former honorees and guests. They will receive their awards at a black-tie ball Feb. 24 at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. Gilmore is chairman, and Meg Salyer is co-chairman of the ball, formerly called the Mardi Gras Ball.
ART TRADITIONS
There was an open house at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for the exhibition “Pinturas de Fe: The Retablo Tradition in Mexico and New Mexico.”
The Feb. 2 event, with 175 people attending, featured exhibit curator Lane Coulter and award winner Charles M. Carrillo, both of Santa Fe, N.M.
Guests learned about the European styled, two-dimensional paintings, usually depicting the patron saint of a family or a saint from a village church. The small retablos were created for use on home altars and village churches.
FESTIVE LUNCHEON

Members of Pi Beta Phi Alumni were at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club Wednesday for the annual “Gathering of the Angels” luncheon. National Young Mother of the Year Connell Branan, wife of Oklahoma State Senator Cliff Branan, and also a Pi Beta Phi Alumni member. was guest speaker. She talked on balancing motherhood with other obligations and interests.
Jennifer Eve introduced Branan and Alumnae Club President Mary Kay Bullard gave the invocation. Luncheon Chairmen Betty Huckabay and Leslie Buford welcomed the Pi Phis and their guests. Branan noted she had been traveling across the country as National Young Mother of the Year. She has realized that Oklahoma families are revered and mothers here are celebrated. “Oklahoma mothers are all wonderful mothers,” she said. She discussed her own mother and father…”a remarkable team” and the “true grit” of the founding mothers of our country.
