The Skirvin Hotels most haunted?

I receive  a lot of requests concerning the Skirvin Hotel in Downtown OKC. Travelers seek rooms that have a bit more to offer outside of luxurious accommodations.

Perhaps they have heard about the rumored tale of “Effie” a distraught mother and secret lover plunging to her death out of pure uncertainty and heartache? Maybe they heard the hotels haunting tales because the NY KNICKS & LAKERS were so afraid that they lost a game over it? Maybe people are intrigued by phantom “ladies of the night” potentially visiting their room? No matter what the reason is, there is no denying that the Skirvin Hotel has a haunting past. Since it was reopened, the unexplainable claims are making their way to the surface. Both new and old stories are being shared online and some of them will make your skin crawl.

The Skirvin Hotel is not “scary”, unless you have a great imagination and perhaps a basketball game the next day. Thousands of people spend the night in the hotel each month without ever witnessing a paranormal event or unexplained occurrence. Some of those people are staying in the hotels “hot spots” and never miss out on a wink of sleep. It’s not scary but it is one of the most highly recommended destinations I give to adventure minded travelers concerning the OKC Metro Area. The hotel is friendly and makes everyone feel at home. It doesn’t matter if you are hosting a child’s slumber party, business meeting or having a romantic get-a-way, the Skirvin is top notch when it comes to accommodations and service.

We have been monitoring reports of ghostly phenomenon since the book “Ghostlahoma” was released, which was around the same time the Skirvin opened it’s doors. Our team conducted a private trial at the hotel and learned a lot about the potential of ghostly activity. There is not a lot there, but when people least expect it they may get a blast from the past.

Areas in the hotel where we recommend you make your reservations.

At night- see if you can hear talking, movement or a baby crying. Granted, there could be a real live baby/family in the room next to you, use common sense.

The key to witnessing something paranormal at the Skirvin hotel is to not expect anything. Just enjoy the hotel without looking for ghosts. We do not recommend anyone walking around this place with EMF meters, video cameras or any other kind of cheesy gadgets. You will be amazed what you possibly can get if you just run an audio recorder. Outside of potentially disturbing the other guests, the Skirvin does not need “ghost hunters” walking around it’s more classy than that. The hotel is more receptive to people that are there, enjoying the hotel and having a few cocktails in the Red Piano Lounge.

The Skirvin is an absolutely beautiful hotel. I was lucky enough to get to experience the Skirvin right before its remodel, and it was then that I could see the eerie feelings and where the stories came about. I think the Skirvin is a magnificent hotel and everyone should experience its beauty.

I love that place, the architecture is amazing and they did an excellent job keeping that old feel to it. It does have some interesting history, not even related to the paranormal or morbid. It was a meeting place for many national leaders and politicians, and some of the nation’s most intriguing political history is tied to the Skirvin.

Great story Tonya!! As you said the Skirvin is a great place to visit and the history of it is amazing!

@ James you are so right. The history is magnificent regardless of the spooky tales. It’s not to be taken as any kind of side show attraction in Oklahoma by any means.
I have yet to hear a complaint, outside of a couple of basketball teams. lol

Effie-related tales are certainly common: wanton spectral visitors and disembodied cries of some phantom infant. However, if we have in mind that hauntings may arise from tragic deaths, the far more substantiated ones involving workers who pluged to theirs from faulty scaffolding during a rennovation decades ago, or that of former governor Charles Haskins, might keep us on the look out for other visitors that go bump in the night. At the very least, any visitor will have had the joy of staying in a truly remarkable and historic hotel – even if their wallets feel a bit lighter for the pleasure.

I’ve only been in the lobby of the Skirvin and fell in love with it.
I hope to stay there some day, not to investigate but to be pampered and enjoy the luxurious accomadations!

I for one have only seen the outside and, only pictures from the inside. Ghost stories are great, but what I really love about the Skirvin is the preservation of the furniture kept with the hotel. I love old things. I believe if I were to ever catch the opportunity to visit this legendary place, I would definitely go. Two thumbs up, Tonya!

Great story! I’ve often heard tales of the old Skirvin, but never visited it since it was re-opened. Since I have an anniversary coming up, and can’t decide of what to do, staying downtown in a great luxary hotel sounds like a great idea! It has a great history. If we hear something, great, if not, great…After reading your story, and reading everyones comments on how great the Skirvin is… it sounds like a great place to visit on a special occasion!
I can’t go wrong taking someone to a luxary hotel, and ordering breakfast in bed! Thanks for the info, I will remember those locations as I walk through admiring the place!

My husband and I stayed at the Skirvin hotel for our one year anniversay this past Friday night. Just got home today. We stayed in a suite on the 10th floor. My husband woke me up in the middle of the night asking me “do you hear that?” For a split second I heard the cry of a baby. My husband woke up to it and listened for a minute and knew that’s what it was, so he woke me up and like I said I heard it for a second or two and then it stopped. The stay was amazing. Loved Loved Loved our room.
