Oklahoma hiking: Backwoods hike at Roman Nose State Park Aug. 21
Another outdoor recreation opportunity, courtesy of Backwoods’ Norman store. Have a look, and by all means, hit the trail with these folks!
…
Here are the details for the next hike…
Where: Roman Nose State Park near Watonga.
When: Saturday, Aug. 21. Meet at Backwoods in Norman at 7:45am to sign waivers and organize carpools. We will leave promptly at 8 a.m. There is also the option of meeting the group at the Visitor’s Center at 9:30. If you choose to meet us at the park, please RSVP so that I know to look for you there!
Details: We will hike the Watonga Lake North Loop (4.9 miles). This hike begins and ends at the Visitor’s Center. The hike is rated as moderate. Most reasonably fit adults and children over the age of 12 should have no problems completing the hike. This is a great hike to enjoy with your active dog! The trail consists of dirt and large rocks. It is mostly flat with some short climbs and descents.
What to Bring: A daypack with at least 2 liters of water, snacks, and a lunch (we’ll stop and eat at on the trail). Depending on the weather, a rain jacket or bug and sun protection may be necessary. If it has been raining, the trails at Roman Nose can be really muddy, so choose your footwear carefully. An extra pair of shoes to change into for the car ride home is not a bad idea. Dogs are welcome at the park! If you are bringing your canine companion, make sure you carry extra water and a container to put it in, as well as food and a leash.

That is one of my favorite hikes – you can see down the canyon for miles. Many people are surprised to find this type of terrain in Western Oklahoma. The “gyp hills” are full of interesting geology and natural beauty. While you are there, don’t miss the Big Springs of Bitter Creek, a key feature of Chief Roman Nose’s former camp grounds. Definitely worth the drive to see this unique spot!
