I can see that. I'm kind of in the same vein. Others might not be, however. But that's what I like about this subject: It challenges people to go outside their comfort zones, and hopefully grow during that process.
To me, roughing it is being in a place where you don't expect people to live.

When I went to Guatemala, I never felt like I was roughing it. Even though we stayed in a place without a circulation system, couldn't drink the water and the net access was limited to a snail-paced internet cafe down the straight. Or even working in a sheet-metal and concrete shack with a dirt floor and no plumbing. I simply can't bring myself to say I was roughing it when people live in the environment everyday of their lives.

Yes, I took far more from those trips than any in a resort with a day spa and free HBO, but to me roughing it isn't any time you're out of your comfort zone. I reserve that phrase when you're spending your time in a place where, for the most part, people don't live.

I feel the same way. With only one exception, every time I've gone out in the backcountry, I feel better for it. In the same way, every time I travel and get to go off the beaten path and experience new cultures in the raw, I feel that I grow from it. A few sacrifices here and there have reaped major blessings for me.

There is a lot of stress related to everyday life. When I get out into the wilderness, the wonder of what is around the next corner becomes 100% of your focus and somehow all that stress gets left behind. It gives me a chance to rejuvenate.
