Really interesting article. I can honestly say i have rarely thought of having to protect myself in the backcountry. But i am sure such attacks happen. After reading this i will have to think about this more.

I can't imagine any reason I would ever worry about self defense in the backcountry. People are more likely to attack you in the city. Who wants to take the time to hike into the wilderness to get the 3 bucks I've got in my wallet? There is virtually zero chance of an animal attack as well. I've been lucky enough to see 2 mountain lions and 1 bear and each time that was what I was hunting for.

All of the statistics I've read regarding animal and people attacks show that the rates of incidence are *extremely* low with backcountry users. Sure, carry a gun for bears in Alaska because they really are a regular issue there. But most anywhere else you're worrying yourself to death over nothing. How many people go hiking without incident every year? How many are attacked by crazed rapists?

The data shows that texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving. Bring some numbers to the table, otherwise it's just unnecessary fear.
