Whooping Cranes

Whooping cranes are passing through Oklahoma

One of five whooping cranes that stopped in a field six miles south of Washington, Indiana on April 1, 2008, looks for food in a flooded field. According to naturalist Harold Allison, whooping cranes have endangered status and there are only about 145 birds in the lone self-sustaining population in North America. Allison said the birds are on their way to summer nesting grounds in Wisconsin and stopped to feed on plant and animal remains left by receding floodwaters.
