College anglers looking for title on Fort Gibson
Bass anglers from Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Northeastern Oklahoma and the University of Central Oklahoma are among the college bass fishing clubs that will be competing Friday and Saturday on Fort Gibson Lake in the 2012 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Super Regional.
It’s the first regional to be held this year on the Bassmaster Collegiate Series. The Midwest Super Regional takes place next weekend on the Mississippi River in Wisconsin.
Last year 168 two-man teams competed in the Central Super Regional on Fort Gibson Lake. At stake is a spot in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, where the winning college angler will earn a berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake next February.
A college angler, Andrew Upshaw of Stephen F. Austin, competed for the first time in this year’s Bassmaster Classic on the Red River. The top OSU team from the Super Central Regional at Fort Gibson also will advance to another tournament for a chance to fish for $100,00, said OSU angler Hunter Gregory.
Gregory of Yukon and Craig Fowler of Stigler make up one of five two-men teams that will be competing for OSU. The OSU Bass Fishing Club has 22 members that fish in four collegiate series of events. The club holds tournaments among members to see which anglers advance to the college events, Gregory said.
Other college teams in the tourney are Arkansas, Arkansas Tech, Central Missouri, Dallas Baptist, Kansas State, LSU-Shreveport, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M and the Universithy of Lousiana-Monroe.
Gregory and Fowler were pre-fishing for the tournament on Fort Gibson Lake on Wednesday and Gregory landed a 6-pounder on a buzz bait.
“I’ve never had a fish hit a buzz bait so hard,” said Gregory, who is majoring in fisheries and aquatic ecology at OSU. “I think we found a good source of fish today to set ourselves up in this tournament.”
Gregory, 19, has been fishing in bass tournaments with his father, Russ Gregory of Shawnee, since he was 8. The father-son pair won a Future Bass tournament on Lake Texoma in 2008.
The Bassmaster College Series Super Central Regional on Fort Gibson Lake will be broadcast the following weekend on ESPNU.
