WATER RELEASE/CANTON LAKE.1649
View looking down the North Canadian River channel from a dam turret just above one of three lower conduit gates at Canton Lake Dam. Released water is on its way to Lakes Overholser and Hefner in NW OKC. Released water will flow from Canton Lake for about 2 weeks. It will take at least 3-4 days for the first of the released water to reach Lake Overholser in NW OKC; a 113.3 mile journey in river miles. Water will be released in increments through early Wednesdy until flow of 1,000 cubic feet of waterper second is reached. This flow rate is the maximum rate which the river channel can contain. Water is being released through one of three lower conduit gates in the release area at Canton lake Dam.. Each lower conduit gate is 12 feet high and 7 feet wide. Release gate will be about 4 feet high when maximum flow rate is reached. Spillway gate is not being used because Canton Lake water level is only one foot above lip of spillway, and planned release of 20,000 acre feet of water is expected to lowerentire lake level 3.2 feet. So it was decided to use lower conduit gate for entire water release, which is expected to take about 2 weeks. OKC only requested 10,000 acre feet of water, but 20,000 acre feet is being released so that 10,000 acre feet reaches the OKC lakes.
