Deadline looming for controlled hunts
Hunters have through Sunday to apply for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s controlled hunts for 2011-12.Online applications for the hunts will be accepted through Sunday at www.wildlifedepartment.com.
Once-in-a-lifetime elk and antelope hunts, prize whitetail deer hunts and a range of other quality deer and turkey hunts are available through a random drawing.
The cost is $5 and hunters can sign up for as many hunts as they want.
Most hunts are held on Wildlife Department or other government-owned or managed lands where unrestricted hunting would pose safety concerns or where overharvest might occur.
Among the most sought after hunts are the bull elk hunts on the Wichita Mountans Wildlife Refuge and they are the toughest to win.
Last year, there were a total of 35,245 applications for 326 elk hunts. The odds of being drawn were 1 in 108.
