Fish hatchery saved, but fishing fees may increase
The Oklahoma City Council voted unamiously Tuesday to keep open the H.B. Parsons Fish Hatchery, but it may cost anglers more money.
Rick Godfrey, chairman of the Oklahoma City Fish and Game Commission, said council members are considering raising fees for city boating and fishing permits to pay for the cost of the hatchery.
“They are looking at raising 30 percent, or something like that,” Godfrey said. “We don’t have a number yet.”
The hatchery, which has a $160,000 operating budget from the city, was scheduled for closure by the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department as part of a 12 percent across the board budget cut ordered for city departments.
Anglers began an email and telephone campaign to city council members to save the hatchery, where fish such as channel catfish, striped bass hybrids and walleye are raised and stocked in city lakes and ponds.
