Hunting has been enjoyed by many friends and family in Oklahoma for years. it is a great state with tons of recources. I don't think hunting has become irrellivant, but alot of hunters I know simply can't enjoy a quality hunt any more because of the numbers of hunters today that either have the land leased or that swarm into the public areas. It seems its harder and harder to find a place to hunt. Yes, license sales are the key for the odwc to purchase more hunting land, but what is the hunter holding capacity for these wma. Maybe if we had more of it, thru tax revenue, our hunts would become more quality hunts, and the deer may have more oppurtunity to mature. It seems so many hunters shoot the first buck that shows up. " Let them grow up for god's sake" Maybe some changes would help. Perhaps holding rifle season a couple of weeks later, such as Kansas does ,after the rut, would help the younger deer survive to be older than a year and a half. Something needs to be done, The sixteen day season was created so hopefully people would be more selective and harvest more mature deer. Well, it didn't work. I know we have a great deer herd compared to what it used to be, but why can't it be better. Why cant the hunters be "protecters" of the young bucks and work together to see these animals reach maturity. We need to have the "Kansas hunter mentality" We need to be ashamed to tag a young deer.
