Paul Newsom dies of cancer

Paul Newsom died Wednesday of cancer
Paul Newsom, 64, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at his home in Bixby.
The time seemed fitting for a true hunter like Paul, said his wife of 26 years, Brenda.
Most people remember Paul Newsom as the pitch man for car dealerships in television commercials and the former spokesman for Oklahoma Natural Gas.
Paul had television looks and a radio voice. But many of us will remember Paul for his outdoor shows.
“Paul Newsom’s Great Outdoors” aired for more than 15 years.
It was a family affair as his son Bo worked as co-producer, videographer, and editor, and his daughter Emma, who appeared in Emma’s Emails, a feature in the show.
In addition to that show, Newsom also produced and hosted several other outdoor shows, including Hunting The Country, Outdoor Adventure Digest and The Camp Cook.
Hunting, shooting and training labrador retrievers were his passions.
Paul was a big believer in donating his time and giving back. At different times, he was president of the United Sportsman’s Alliance of Oklahoma, president of the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and president of the Oklahoma City Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
Newsom coached his own children in little league football, baseball and basketball teams for more than 10 years. His daughter Emma, who just completed her sophomore year in college, was a Bixby track champion and graduated from BHS in 2007.
She probably inherited that athletic ability from Paul, who graduated from Southeast High School in Oklahoma City and played football at Murray State College and Oklahoma State University.
He also played football for the Oklahoma City Plainsmen semi-pro football team and was a member of the National Champion 1976-1977 Nelson Paint slow-pitch softball team in Oklahoma City.
Funeral services for Newsom will be Tuesday (July 7) at 2 p.m. at Asbury Methodist Church in Tulsa, 6767 South Mingo Road.
Oklahoma lost a true gentleman and great outdoorsman.
