The Sooners (11-2, 0-1 in the Big 12) are coming off a defeat by No. 13 Wisconsin in last weekend’s ESPNU Wrestling Invitational in Oklahoma City. Battling back after a 9-0 deficit and tying the match at 15, OU came up short in the last bout, losing 18-15.
OU’s weekly notes
Straight from the source, here’s OU athletic notes for the week.
MEN’S BASKETBALL (13-5, 1-2)
Last Week: The Sooners split their two games, losing 85-55 at No. 3 Kansas on Monday before regrouping to beat Texas Tech 63-61 at home on Saturday. Longar Longar scored a team-high 21 points against Kansas and shared team-high honors with Taylor Griffin by netting 16 points versus Texas Tech. Against the Red Raiders, Longar added nine rebounds and three blocks while Griffin grabbed 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year.
Wrestling: OU falls to Wisconsin
OU’s wrestling team needed redshirt freshman Nathan Fernandez to knock off No. 13-ranked Kyle Massey in the heavyweight bout to give Oklahoma the win over Wisconsin.
But Massey proved to be too much for the freshman, defeating Fernandez by a final of 4-2 and giving the Badgers (9-2-1) an 18-15 victory over the Sooners.
The loss halted a seven match win streak for the Sooners, now 11-2 on the season.
Wrestling: Dr. Death in Norman tonight
Former University of Oklahoma All-American and professional wrestling sensation Steve Williams, most famously known as “Dr. Death,” will be recognized and honored in Norman tonight when the No. 18 Sooners host No. 16 Tennessee-Chattanooga at 7 p.m. at the Howard McCasland Field House.
“Dr. Death was one of the greatest and most unique athletes OU has ever produced.” head coach Jack Spates said. ”He was also one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time after he graduated from the University.”
