Oklahoma gymnast Jonathan Horton has been named the winner of the 2008 Nissen-Emery Award. The honor was presented at an awards dinner Wednesday night on the eve of the 2008 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships on the campus of Stanford University. The Nissen-Emery Award is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding senior collegiate gymnast.

For the third time this season, Oklahoma’s Jonathan Horton has been named Gymnast of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The senior from Houston, Texas, was also honored by the conference on Feb. 11 and Feb. 25.

Senior Jonathan Horton has been named one of seven finalists for the Nissen-Emery Award, given annually to the nation’s top senior men’s gymnast. Considered the Heisman Trophy of collegiate gymnastics, the Nissen-Emery Award will be presented at the 2008 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships banquet on Wednesday, April 16, in Stanford, Calif.

Up to No. 3 in the latest GymInfo rankings, the Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team faces its biggest test of the season at the Pacific Coast Classic, Feb. 23 in Oakland, Calif. Five of the top 11 teams in the country, including No. 1 Stanford, will join the Sooners at the Oakland Convention Center. The meet, hosted by USA Sports Management, is scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. Oklahoma time start and will be broadcast by Fox Sports Net nationwide via satellite at a later date.

The fourth-ranked Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team begins a three meet road trip Saturday as the Sooners visit No. 10 Iowa. The top-10 clash is slated for a 2 p.m. start at the Field House on the Iowa campus.

The No. 17 Sooners return home this Friday, Feb. 15, at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman when they host the Cal Poly Mustangs (5-6) at 7 p.m., in the first annual “Beauty and the Beast” event.

The squad will share the floor with the OU women’s gymnastics team who will simultaneously compete against Big 12 rival Iowa State in the dual-team event.

After leading the OU women’s gymnastics squad to its 12th consecutive win last Saturday, Sooner gymnasts Kiara Redmond-Sturms and Mary Mantle were honored as Big 12 Gymnast and Event Specialist of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Oklahoma senior Jonathan Horton has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week for Feb. 11, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is the first of the season for the two-time MPSF Gymnast of the Year and follows a solid performance at the 2008 Winter Cup Challenge, Feb. 7-9 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Oklahoma senior Jonathan Horton will be featured Saturday in the Tylenol Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular presented by Chesapeake Energy. The made-for-TV event will air at 1:30 p.m. on NBC. Viewers should check their local listings to confirm times in their area.
