I agree. Willie, you're looking at it all wrong. The KStae game adn ND game came down to a few plays and the game goes the other way. I was there!!! Also take away Johny football and the Cotton Bowl is evenly matched. Even then if Landry makes a few more plays in the first half and comes out firing in the second its much more than the score reflects. You cant generalize about an entire team, or even one game until you break down the entire system. If the sysytem is broke fire the coach. It seems to me though a few coaches needed the ax. Stoops stays.

Stoops has a job to do and is doing it. He wont put up with these buddy coaches that players may or may not lean towards. He is focusing on the Big picture which is putting the pieces together to win football games. These stupid rantings about stats and rankings is crap. Look at the 2000 NC team. That 1999 recruiting class was not much better than what weve had any other year. One player can make all the difference at takes putting the right pieces in the right places to get that done. Look at freakin T&M. They sucked last year and should have won the NC this year. Im just sayin.....

matty0701, name 5 other college head coaches that make $5 mill. or more a season besides Stoops. Tell me what the last 5 recruiting classes were rated and why they are out of talent in the O & D line. Tell me where OU was rated in the final polls and what their team stats. were in the last 5 seasons. Tell me where the 9-10 teams they beat finished in the top 25. That will start to let you know that you completely missed my point.

It's getting harder to recruit the elite athletes. Just look at what So. Mississippi (?) just pulled off this year with recruiting! Conferences, venues, facilities, fan base, NFL prospects, coaches, etc. all become factors. You have to have one heck of a salesman. Stoops has been at OU much longer than Saban at LSU or Bama....Urban Meyer at Florida or Ohio St. about the only top coach I can think of that is comparable is Les Miles at LSU. Even Smack Brown hit a wall sooner than Stoops. Two years ago folks gripped about Kevin Wilson and he suddenly found a new job at mighty Indiana. Last year BV and Martinez....this year 3 more out the door. Stoops just didn't get rid of them all at once like SMack did. Texas still isn't recruiting well. It's the Chip Kelly's, Brian Kellys, Urban Meyer, Saban, Miles, Muscramps, Sumlin that are making the hauls. Not even USC is doing so great. Stoops has to,fix the recruiting...without enough quality players, he's done and so is OU. No one will work harder (with the exception of brother Mike) to, yes....rebuild the greatness that once was. Even Switzer retooled, so did Bud. Excellence and longevity takes a special kind of coach to maintain....even Joe Pa had several down years because of recruiting. It did Bobby Bowden in. Hang loose! Stoops will get it right.

willie, Paying a coach 5 mil a year has become a norm in college football. Lets not forget Gundy makes about 4 million a year to coach up in Stillwater. There are only one or two schools right now who are getting a so called "good investmnet" under your described standards. 1.5 million dollar results would be compareable to Kevin Wilson at Indian. I will take 10 wins a season any day. Im sure Texas wishes they have been as good as OU these passed 4 years. Bottom line Stoops is a great coach and there are tons of programs who wish they had the resources to pay a guy like Stoops to coach their program to conference championships and 10 win seasons.

A staff normally needs tweaking every so often, but, tweaking a team & staff is called rebuilding. Stoops been at OU to long to start over with a staff and recruiting. OU has dropped to a tweener. Not and elite, but just good enough to get 9-10 easy wins & maybe back into a BCS bowl. Paying a guy $5million for $1.5million results, in the 3rd or 4th rated conference in FBS, isn't a good return on your investment.

After reading some of these comments on OU football it is beyond me how people can be so childish. Some people are so uneducated (stupid) regarding football that they think they know where all the problems are, what the cure is ect. I do not claim to be an expert by any means but I sure don't jump ship when things are not going good. As with players, you can put them in position to make a play but you can't make it for them. Same way with coaches, you hire them and give them the resources to go where ever the need to find the good recruits. When things are going good, getting the top players ect. everything is fine. You can't blame the head coach if certain coaches start to lose the edge they have used to get those select players. They still have the best of resources. BUT HEY, blame the head coach. Hope you get my drift, if not, there's not enough room here to go on....hope you give our Sooners a chance to turn things around...

I hate that Shipp got the ax. Losing Granger's brother probably sealed his fate as I am sure the thought was even with all of the graduating seniors, there would be an anchor. Shipp did flip a DT from A$M, but losing Gramger's brother hurt him immensely. I bet to thinking went like this...you could have had 2 4-star DTs instead of one. Tough decisions often come down to one factor...in this case...it killed Shipp's career at OU. It is so hard to evaluate coaching performances when injuries plague a team like OU for the past 4 years....in fact since the Boisie St. loss. The last third of a season and most bowl games since 2008, OU has been decimated at one position or another. O-line last year, D-line the year before, various skill positions the few years before. And I am talking decimated...not just a starter going out, but no 2nd team replacement, and sometimes no 3rd string replacement. None of that matters to big donors when those problems become the norm like they have at OU since Boisie St. It all comes down to recruiting....which also means quality depth.

I think that firing people like Ship who are good coaches is simply diversionary. Stoops needs to look into the mirror at his leadership and fire inside and "man up". These other coaches have been pretty good the past 10 years and I doubt that their coaching ability has diminished but rather the man at the helm is more likely has not provided the fire and motivation for the team and coaching staff to do better.

Brown did the same thing by changing his staff and the shorthorns are still rebuilding. Brown may be a goner if they do not make a marked improvement this year. Stoops should look at Brown and look inwardly at the root causes.

I will say though that the Sooner defense really sucked the past few years...this year especially. Mike surely did hot help but he deserves a recruiting class or two to prove himself. Next year does not look promising. There are two many holes to fill..the only area that still is deep are the receivers...defense, though last year they were pitiful the last few games, may be even worse because of the large turnover in players...or maybe the new players will do a better job. But then again this recent recruiting class came up short for a team that wants to be in the top tier. Still 2013 most likely will not be a good year. So...what will Stoops do this time next year? I suggest that the Coaching staff's update their resume's.
