M. Stoops put OU's fastest defenders on the field Saturday. What chaffed my butt was the fact that suddenly, all of those defensive backs forgot how to wrap up and drive their legs through a tackle. But even that wasn't the worst. The worst occurred when certain defenders completely gave up on plays. Just stood around once they were beaten. One play that comes to my mind was late in the fourth quarter. Austin was running inside the 10 and juked Demontre Hurst right out of his shoes. Instead of exerting supreme effort and following the play, Hurst stood there motionless and admired Austin's jaunt into the endzone. That lack of effort is inexcusable at ANY level; even Pop Warner. Austin may have stumbled, or another player night have gotten to him and needed help. You NEVER give up on a play until that play is over. And Hurst was not the only guilty party. Get out quicked, or out talented or outcoached; okay. But lack of effort is always unforgivable. I don't care how talented a player is; if I saw that lack of effort that player would be buried on the depth chart behind someone who never stops hustling. People are blaming M. Stoops schemes for the abysmal showing, but what I saw was several DB's who just didn't want to tackle anybody.
