Jason,

Side note: I am just busting you chops for the fun of it ala message board banter.

But one other thing I would note as an argument against... and you are kind of making it for me.

The OU-ISU game didn't even get top billing on your paper's own Sports page the next morning. I know the LoSuRs finally got the big NU monkey off their back that same weekend, and for them, yes, big deal. But if the win over ISU truly had all that much impact... well?

I just don't think you can or have made a case.

-Richard

Southern Yankee:
1999: Texas A&M
2000: Texas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Florida State
2001: Kansas State, Texas
2002: Texas, Colorado, Colorado ("Mulligan" for BigXII Champ), Washington State
(Sorry, I just disagree: I remember the ISU game following Texas week as well, and the people I hung around with thought it was good to have ISU finally come in with a ranking to avoid the post-Texas letdown. But there wasn't any concern in our camp. We all felt ISU was going to come crashing back down to earth because they really hadn't done anything special despite Senaca's heroics. That is, it was Senaca, and not much else.)
2003: Bama, Texas, oSu
2004: Texas, oSu, Texas A&M

I've only covered the first 5 years of Stoops in Norman, and would put every single game I mentioned well ahead of the ISU game as a "best win". Take a look at the rankings and situations yourself. The only one I think that is even questionable is the win over Wazzu... in a Rose Bowl. Rose. Bowl. That's how much an afterthought this ISU game is... or should be.

People! I remember this game, and just as importantly, the week(s) leading up to it. Iowa state legitimately appeared to have turned a corner. They had a mobile QB, much more so than the Alabama QB who had given us fits earlier this same season. OU's defense was well on their road of week by week inconsistency that has plagued them thru out Stoops' last decade. ISU'a only loss had been a squeaker in the season opener to Florida State. The Sooners were to be embarrassed at unranked A&M and Zero State later in the year. This was a good win and deserves to be on the list Let's remember we are NOT yet in the top ten., and, Richard, I'm not sure there are 10 "Great Wins" in the Stoops era. At any rate, a win against the number 9 ranked team with a Heisman candidate at the time of the game, deserves recognition, regardless of the logo on their helmet.

Jason,

We get it that this is your opinion. And I suspect as with most tabloid organizations today you're not trying to produce anything more worthy than pot-stirring. But here's the thing with this opinion of yours, and there is no nice way to say it: It sucks.

Bob Stoops has now completed 13 seasons with OU. First, consider that there generally has been one truly great win each of the seasons he has been here. Secondly, consider that 2000's "Red October" eats up 3 of those slots, and the national championship that year a fourth. That only leaves 11 games.

No way, no how, does this Iowa State game even sniff that list. Frankly, it isn't Top 20. You want to find a way to squeeze it into the Top 30? Now there might be an argument.... barely.

Congratulations on achieving full blown message board troll with this poorly conceived hack job.

There will never be a day when an OU victory over Iowa State cracks the top of any list. Perception lacking, me thinks.

Jason - There is no such thing as a "high profile game" when involving us and Iowa State. I just don't see how a game that ended with the final score of 49-3 belongs in any greatest OU wins list. I'm pretty confident that the overwhelming majority of Sooner fans would agree with me on this.

Don't get me wrong Jason, I appreciate your work and enjoy reading it. I'll just never be convinced that any win against against Iowa State as a top one. Those wins belong right next to all the wins against mediocre OOC competition.

Patrick: I appreciate the kind words. Here's my point: I think any game against a top-10 team with the Heisman frontrunner as its QB -- regardless of what team it is -- that is won by 46 points is worthy of at least No. 11 on a list like this. But hey, that's just one guy's opinion. I appreciate your comments and hope you'll keep 'em coming.

OK....my mistake...this is the game...the score was 29-0 at halftime...great defensive performance....i was there....and left esrly...but still it IS ISU. We were supposed to win and it was apparent very early we would. The only question in fans minds was after beating UT the week before, would the team be flat against a team with a Heisman candidate? Back then the answer was a RESOUNDING NO! Unlike against BU this year, where the "D" never showed up....

No offense, but there's just no way that any game with Iowa State should make the top 10 of anything in regards to our football program. Surely there were many more attractive wins to put in this slot.

Patrick: It didn't make the top 10; it was No. 11. But even so, this was a high-profile game against a Heisman candidate that the Sooners thoroughly dominated. If Iowa State hadn't completely fallen apart after this game and had a more successful overall season, this win would've been higher on the list. Thanks for your comment! -- Jason
