I agree RW. in a capitalistic society it IS about competition and no where is that more prevalent than college athletics. Maybe Stoops doesn’t play the 3rd and 4th stringers because they have issues. To play them would be giving a wink and a nod to their bad behavior. For some kids all they want is to tell dad they played a few downs. For a coach, to play kids that have not meet the expectations undermines everything he is trying to do and sends the wrong message to the rest of the team. Sounds like Stoops hung on too long to some of the ones he finally let go in December.

The NCAA cannot change the rule on athletes who change their minds. Someone has to be the adult. Can you imagine the instability that would ensue? The coach won’t play me enough so I am leaving….hoe much is enough? Would someone like Demarco Murray have stayed at OU? Had he left would things have turned out better for him? The NFL and MLB have free agency…their are restrictions on player movement in the pros as well.

I went to college on an academic scholarship. I had to keep my GPA above a certain standard in order to receive said scholarship the next year. Everyone has to work for “free”
money…..and rightfully so.

I was shocked to hear Stoops say some of those he let go had failed drug tests, and it sounded like they had failed repeated drug tests. That is against the law and shouldn’t be tolerated at a university. First time offense, suspended for the balance of the season. Second offense, pull the scholarship. I’m surprised Stoops would tolerate this behavior. Makes me wonder how prevalent this is in the program. We hear that the State legislature is considering a bill to drug test welfare recipients. Same standard for the scholarship athletes.

Good thought Chris. I go along with you. This might be an area that hasn’t been given a reasonable amount of concern, or maybe, that’s why the God Father is against it, and it has been given some thought by him and not the NC2A.

If you don’t have multiyear scholarships then the athletes shouldn’t be bound to the school. If the school can cut the teenager loose with no penalty then the teenager should be able to change schools without penalty. Why should all the power reside with the school? I think if the athlete has to sit out a year and lose the year of elgibility then if the school cuts the scholarship they can’t award it to someone else for a year. What is fair for one is fair for the other. That would ensure some level of committment from both sides.

Those last 3 paragraphs should also apply to staff. You also can’t be married to your staff and produce the expected results.

I’m sure coach stoops is right here,but I would think if he gave them time on the field during all those routes we all have enjoyed,while risking the chance of injurys to first stringers,they might jump on the bandwagon.But I feel this coaching staff creates this themselves,there have been dozens of good players that should of been playing,but they are regulated to ride the pine,so why shouldn’t they r ebell.And then theres the ones as he says enough is enough. Multi-year scholarships,I wonder what school would benefit in recruiting offering this gem,I’d offer a trip to hawaii the next4years.Now thats a top 5 recruiting tool,by the way they are looking for a home an home schedule.
