OU freshman tight end: “CLEARED!”
CAMPUS CORNER — Incoming freshman tight end Taylor McNamara told me last week he was hopeful the NCAA would clear him by Monday, at the latest. Took until Wednesday, but the Californian tweeted “CLEARED!” this afternoon. Guess that means he’s in.
Some sort of class credit required the NCAA’s attention, but it sounds as if McNamara – the only high school early enrollee – got a thumbs up for it.
McNamara, who was staying at a hotel with his family last week, was concerned about how long he would be holed up waiting. OU found a way to allow him to stay in Bud Wilkinson dorm, where McNamara told us all about his love of ping pong. He also reported his unfortunate defeat early Wednesday morning — at the hands of a, gasp, girl.
Now he can get to class and catch up on what he has missed the past week.
At last check, receiver Trey Metoyer was still tying up loose ends at Hargrave prep in Virginia. But he is expected to arrive and enroll any day.
Speaking of receivers, a note on top-rated Dorial Green-Beckham. According to his high school coach, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino may have erred when he “bumped into” Green-Beckham in San Antonio. Petrino was in town for the coaches’ convention, Green-Beckham for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
The significance here is that Petrino will not be able to visit DGB this week as a result of whatever happened.
Here’s a thought: Don’t have hundreds of college coaches in the same place where high-profile recruits are playing an exhibition game. It’s a big country.
Earlier this afternoon, ESPN’s Tom Luginbill was on the Finebaum radio program in Alabama. He said DGB was down to Arkansas, Missouri and Texas as his final three. That’s something that has been going around the past week, but OU has not given up. Sooners coach Bob Stoops and co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell went Monday night to Green-Beckham’s high school basketball game. It’s the second time in as many weeks that Norvell has done that. He went with co-OC Josh Heupel in the last visit.

Don’t need him. Even if the ones (all 6 of them don’t an out, there will be other receivers next year. Why UT….they don’t have a QB that is anywhere near Heisman caliber. Arkansas a better pick than any other than OU.
Ask tramel, he knows ‘everything’, just don’t ask him anything remotely related to football, because he will start drooling, waiting in the showers for practice to be over. And you know smelly, sweaty bodies just makes his ball handling skills come out.
OU needs DGB no matter who else is on campus. A reciever of his size and speed with good hands is very rare. Look at Tech without Crabtree or OSU without Blackmon. They just aren’t the same team. I just hope he goes to Missouri or Arkansas. I don’t want to have to try and cover him every year. It is a great thing to have tight ends coming in. Hopefully OU will go back to running the plays we had when Gresham was here. Without Broyles OU desperately needs a go to reciever on third down and someone who can catch the ball in the end zone from 5 yards out. Without DGB that will have to be a tight end.
Ole Lugy has always had it out for OU. He has been the biggest Texas homer out of all recruiting sites and do not believe a word he says. Other recruiting sites have DGB about a 2% chance Texas would land him and OU at about a 35%. Lugy is a joke and that is why I do not follow him ever.
It is not hard to guess what is going through this kid’s mind. He knows exactly were he would like to be playing next fall. He is a very talented young athlete unfortunately he knows this all too well. He is leading the top coaches in college football around in circles like a dog chasing it’s tail. He is absorbing all the attention and pampering he can get. The sad thing is Bob really needs a kid like this to replace what we have lost for Bob’s style of offense. Recruiting seems to be getting tougher and tougher in Sooner land as each page has been turned since the hiring of Heckle and Jeckle.
We managed without Julio Jones….we can manage without DGB. Having Julio and Broyles still would not have won us a NC. DGB is not coming to OU with the stable of receivers we recruited this year. This kid want to step on campus and play immediately….not many freshmen have done that under Stoops….play every down….if this guy has Peterson type talent, then he MIGHT play every down at OU…personally, I wish we could just keep Ryan Broyles. If one of the six receivers we will sign can mirror what HE did, we won’t need DGB. If they can’t why did we sign them?
On the other hand who will we have at LB, DE, corner? Could use some help on the D line….then we might win a NC.

DGB is Texas, signed, sealed, delivered.
