Updated: Mike Stoops’ contract details
CAMPUS CORNER — Let’s just start over.
I cited a report earlier today that said Mike Stoops would make $245,000 a year as OU’s new defensive coordinator. It seemed way low, but I thought it might have had something to do with his Arizona buyout.
It didn’t. Turns out that was the base salary, and the reporter neglected to add the personal services/fundraising portion.
Splashing in that measly $355,000, Stoops will make $600,000 in 2012.
Yeah, that sounds more like it. I apologize for running with the wrong info while I worked on the Tim Kish story.
It’s a three-year deal. If Stoops stays for the 2013 season, he will earn a $50,000 bonus. He’ll receive another $50K the next year, if he stays.
That takes the total value of the contract to $1.9 million, or $633,333 a year.
One more incentive-based bonus: Stoops is also eligible for another $60K, should OU win a national championship.

[...] Travis Haney of The Oklahoman points out that the reasoning behind the number might reside in Stoops’ buyout with Arizona. [...]
We are going to be hurting on the defensive side of the ball….not many D linemen….not a good thing….weren’t we able to sign up to 35 players because of all those who left?
Notice the amount we were paying a non-Stoops to be the DC and the amount we are paying a Stoops to be the DC. It never hurts to be the brother of the head coach.
This design is spectacular! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
This is a lot like the Stoops’ first year here. They were under-rated and had a lot to prove. They had to get a “last minute” qb and look where we wound up! I like what I see in our new LB coach and we still have one week left in recruiting to see what rabbit pops our of the hat. With the departure of those few that thought it was big league, it will be very interesting to see where the wind up. All the while realizing they would be playing at one of the top places in the country if they stayed. I just have a feeling that there is hunger in the Stoops brothers and the men on the field. There a lot of surprizes ahead for the opponents barring injuries.
Totally agree Slow…it will be 4 years this fall since we played for the crystal ball. The media tabbed us last year as the NC favorite. We may not even be in the top 10 to start the season this year…maybe top 15. That is OK. If it falls out that way, there will be a lot of hunger on the team. OU will have enough talent on defense to be a top rated defense…certainly better than #54…which is average at best…..some want to take out the big plays we gave up…2 or whatever per game, but that is living in a world of fantasy stats. Barring injury, I like OU’s chances next year….some immature freshmen and sophomores surely grew up….no one is going to give them anything just because OU is on their helmet….they have to earn it EVERY down….that is what champions do….to do less is to settle and hope things work out.
Lesson for coaches….while the offense got you to the NC in 2008…it couldn’t win it for you….14 points?? One of the greatest offenses in football….defense didn’t lose the game either….gave up 24 points…..to a former Heisman player?? An offense loaded with similar talent?? Florida’s defense stopped our offense….Our defense did a good enough job to beat a talented Florida offense. OU had a top defense that year…coaches…..rethink what we are doing on offense….expand the playbook for all of that offensive talent you have recruited.
Tim you bring to light the problem that has hindered us despite the talent we have had. During the Bradford years we were loaded with offensive talent and the defense came up with huge plays at crucial moments despite being on the field much of the game. Not playing well later in the season was blamed on the injury bug and a defense that played exhausted most of the 3rd and 4th quarters. The last two years we didn’t have the depth we needed on defense but we were loaded offensively especially with receivers and backs. This coaching staff has to expand not only the offensive play book but also the type of offense we run against solid defenses. The type of defenses that can play cover 1 or man and and are athletic enough to play the numbers game that bring the heat. These defenses are strong against the run in the middle and have corners that can play head up and bump and run with any receiver and are great on the edges against the run. This has been our stumbling block because of the limitations of our style of offense. Stoops went to this offense with Bradford and we were loaded with talent yet couldn’t play well late in the season as we advanced. Until we go back to what we did so well during Bob’s early years we will continue to struggle against better teams despite how much talent we have.

There is allot of wondering and head scratching going on. It is having a major impact on recruits that during the season had little doubt about where they were going to be attending school next fall and what colors they hoped be wearing next season on Saturday!!
