Brock makes several great points....lots of our defensive problems can be tied to offense. OSU had our number as much as we had UT's number...and we all know what a lame offense Texas has.. 3 players saved Mack Brown at UT...VY, McCoy, and Shipley. And one defensive coach...Akina. Mack is still trying to find an offense. IF OU ever wants to win another NC, it will have to change what it is presently doing on offense. If 2 of the greatest QBs to ever were crimson and cream cannot score more than 2 TDs in a NC game (03 and 08), and the defense holds the opposing teams to 21 and 24 points, then the problem is on offense, not defense. In 03, White had the team moving at the end of the game by running the ball. Then when we get to the 20 we throw 4 straight plays...against tough defenses in the red zone. Absolutely CRAZY Chuck Long! In 08 Bradford QB the highest scoring offense in history....it got 14 points...playing the hurry up...and both White and Bradford could throw the long ball accurately and had receivers who could stretch the field.

OU needs to either come up with more plays, get a 2 dimensional QB, or invest in better linemen instead od the tremendous quantity of skill players. The SEC and Big 10 don't do anything fancy...they just slug it out...they beat you front physically wearing opposing lines out. Hitler's blitzkrieg only got him so far....at some point he had to slug it out against superior forces...lightning in a bottle didn't mean much at Normandy or Stalingrad.

Stoops had a coaching crony that COULD coach defense, Bo Pellni. on staff for one season. He left for LSU to build the defense for Lester that won Miles first NC. Bo left LSU to become head coach at Neb. Bo brought in his brothers. Why can't OU play defense like the SEC-Big 10? This excuse that it can't be done in the Big 12 because of the teams playing spread offense is BFS. Stoops needs to be held accountable for this weak style of dink & dunk football. L. Jones will not be the answer at QB to win in the BCS. We don't know if BB is the answer? He very seldom gets in between the 20's. What we do know is he can make plays with his legs, which makes him more than a one dimensional QB.

I think he has done a good job at OU, but for him it is time to move on. I think OU will suffer in both the long term and short term. Is Mike Stoops here to stay? I don't think so. If he does well he will be looking to move on again to a head coaching job. OU should have given more thought to this. It looks like bringing in Mike Stoops has cost OU two coaches. One to open a spot for him and one because he was demoted. All because the head coach practices nepotism. Remember in everything it isn't what you know but who you know....or are related to. The fact is the defense won't even be as good next year as they were this year. Also, our offense with three and outs in less than a minute puts way too much pressure on any defense. As long as we run an up tempo offense that doesn't connect our defense will suffer.

Our offense puts lots of points on the board against average teams. We run about 10 offense plays, some games less than that. We spread the field and run the same plays just out of different formations. As the season progresses defenses know what we are going to run before the ball is snapped. Aside from mental mistakes, sloppy fundamental breakdowns, and being in the wrong formation due to poor communication from the sideline to the players this is the huge weakness of this style of offense. OSU knew more about what we were going to do offensively than own players before the play was signaled to the offense.

I hope he stays but Tim but even if he does an we recruit more depth defensively we must keep Whayley healthy next year. If not we are back to throwing the ball underneath mostly and occasionally running the ball or airing it out down field. Jones at this point gets rattled against good defenses that are talented enough to play the numbers game and send extra people after him. The Vikings had the same problem Farve's first season. Three and out or score. Childress didn't use Peterson and Chester Taylor on the ground enough and manage the clock. They struggled inside the red zone like we have against good defenses. Like our defense they were on the field most of the game, became exhausted, gave TDs at the end of the second and fourth quarter, and lost key defensive players due to injuries(Henderson and Winfield). It cost them a super bowl. Very similar situation.

If OU wins another NC, both will get offers as a HC. Mike should have left Zona 2 years ago. There is not an easy place to coach...all have pluses and minuses. Look at OU in 1998...a school rich in tradition but hadn't been in the title hunt for 10 years. Under Gibbs an average team, Blake, well we all know what a train wreck that was. I think Bob had it right...take a school with a great President of the University, AD, a tradition rich football history and great fanbase, and has great recruiting grounds. You might have a chance to be successful. If either want to be a HC at one of those schools, their best bet is to stay at OU and wait on the right job. There are better jobs than Zona, San Diego St., Indiana, Kansas, Clemson. Sometimes, a school like UH can lead to a better job if a coach wins big. Art Briles was part of UH's emergence and Sumlin put the icing on the cake. Leach got a good gig after leaving OU. We haven't seen the last of conference realignment...until we are done with that, I would stay put...

Tom in a previous article it was mentioned that Brent was not one of the better DC in college football and that may be very well correct. It was stated he was average at best which I feel he deserves more credit because we recruit offensively 1st and defense 2nd and get what is left over to work with in most situations. You top that off with the amount of time the defense is on the field and it is awful hard to keep points off the board and players healthy. Who is to say?? Brent may be average at best?? Even so he is the the best LBs position coach in the big 12. Mike and Brent work well together and used to feel comfortable working together. Mike is going to realize quickly it is a much tougher coaching the defense at OU now than previously before he left. That is if we continue to run the same offense next year. I would bet Mike would be concerned, scrambling to replace Brent and be upset that he left. I think the whole OU staff was expecting or hoping that Bent and Mike would be united after Mike was let go. Could be wrong?? I hate to see Brent go and it will have negative impact on the whole OU program for the next couple of years. I think Brent had pretty much made his mind up before he went for a visit. I think Brent had made his mind up to take the job provided when he got down there it felt like a step up the ladder other than a pay raise. The extra money is not worth a bad move for him or his family which I'm hoping to be the situation.
