Brent Venables is the most overrated defensive coordinator in the country. Ever since Mike Stoops left, the OU defense has always been suspect and vulnerable. No National Championship until OU gets another Mike Stoops or Larry Lacewell to actually teach defense.

mizzou used the spread with 5 wideouts and spread oklahoma defense out. give them credit they came too play. yes oklahoma won the game but also ou defense did get exploited, we all know now other schools will try this on us. i left watching the game, but what happen in the end is ou downfall, was they playing prevent defense and let mizzou score with time running out, that sucks for any team, too sit back and let mizzou come down the field too score and thats why ou dropped too number #2 in the poll, all along i said ou is a top 5 team, until they prove it week in and week out they are a top coller team too reckoned with. giving up only 55 points in 3 games ain,t bad. but coach vennables and others on defense had better step it up cause texas is around the corner and bigger teams and quit playing so conservately on offense throw the dam ball down the field and not sideline too sideline or you will get pick off by someone defense please…

Thanks Travis. The definitely had a better game plan with Misery had the ball. I think if we had 4 DL thenour LBs and DBs wouldn’t be so worried about the run to bite on PA. Also, when BV blitzed it was obivious as they were disguised very poorly. Most teams when countering the spread on D, will have 3 or 4 guys down and another 3 or so standing up at the line, with a different combo of rushers and those that drop back to confuse the OL blocking schemes, the hot routes, and the QB. OU scheme looked like Pee-wee football with no disguises.

Not the worse defensive performance as previously stated in the Stoops era. In the 2007 fiesta Bowl, West Virginia gained almost 600 yards, again with a mobile dual threat QB. OU will get to the Championship game if they can find a way to corral the dual QB’s

LSU deserves to be number one – but lets not cover up the fact that they gave up over 500 yards of offense to West Virginia. OU did not play well, and still was control of the game and clearly the better team. It was a great wake up call for OU and they will get it together for Texas.

Just as Sooners fans were quick to overreact after a great win over FSU (“Best defense ever!”), we should also not overreact to a game where we came out flat and still won (Worse defense in Stoops era). The truth is somewhere in between. Against conventional offenses and OSU, the defense seems to show up, but against mobile QBS in an offense that’s spread out with lots of motion, OU seems to struggle.
