Jeff Capel headed to Missouri to assist Frank Haith?
Missouri basketball fans upset with the hiring of Frank Haith might be just a bit happier today … but just a bit.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Tuesday that Haith will bring in former Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel as his lead assistant coach.
Mizzou fans were livid when reports came out late Sunday night that athletic director Mike Alden had hired Haith away from Miami.
Haith led Miami to a 129-101 record in seven seasons with four trips to the NIT and one to the NCAA Tournament — not exactly the most impressive résumé out there.
From Bryan Burwell’s Post-Dispatch column: “If there’s a shortcoming in (Haith’s) résumé it is his in-game coaching, but the good news is Haith is old enough and experienced enough to know what he doesn’t know. Several sources say that he is going to bring former Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel along as his top assistant. Capel has a good reputation in the business for his bench work and X’s and O’s.”
Maybe getting Capel AND Haith will help Mizzou fans get over the loss of Mike Anderson, who bolted for Arkansas.
Then again, maybe not.

Capel’s a good coach, he knows the business. He had some bad luck with some bad apples. I am surprised he didn’t find a head coaching job somewhere, I didn’t really expect him to step down to assistant. But maybe he sees this as a chance to step back, raise his stock and find a good job in the next few years.
I really do wish Jeff Capel well. However, I don’t think that Mizzou is a good situation for him. He needs to learn how to manage a program AND coach Xs & Os. The talent he had at OU has disquised his floor coaching abilty. Blake made him look brilliant but this year’s team may have exposed his lack of skill as a floor coach that gets the most out of the talent you have.
He needs to be at a solid program – not a place where they have gotten a little better, lost their coach and are bringing in a new guy to try to maintain.
I don’t think Capel can handle much time off. He’s probably already bored just hanging out. I saw him wandering around Target in Norman at 9:00 this morning. He skipped the produce and went straight to the bakery section.
Same here. I saw him coming out of a convience store on MLK with a 40 of Malt Liquor and some of those plastic tip flavored cigars. His subs were shakin.

If this news is true Mizzou you guys will be pleasantly suprised. Haith is a GREAT person very good recruiter soso game day coach. If Jeff Capel is going to be his Assistant HC/lead assistant and is the X and O coach you will be doing extremely well in the Big 12. I wish he had done this at Miami.
