The Castiglione Invitational: Who should be the next basketball coach at OU?
OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione is mum on the search to replace men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel. But that doesn’t mean The Oklahoman sports columnist Berry Tramel has to be.
The Oklahoman unveils today its 64-coach bracket, designed to offer some candidates, have a little fun and bring some clarity to the search process. The mission is to find a coach OU wants who wants OU. That’s the bracket’s aim.
And you can play along, too. Make your first round picks now and come back later to pick the round of 32.

If i had not seen it with my own eyes , i would not have believed it.
This is sports ???????? Man Tramall you are feeding off of Capel. How about letting it go.
What is with you and Carlston ???
Jolt’n Joe might just surprise the #ell out of us all and hire Bobby Knight out of retirement. In this day & age he couldn’t recruit the Pi Slamma Jamma bunch, but OU could have the All Engineering Team and win maybe 15 games/yr.
Hire a winning high school bb coach like Coale, seem to work well for the girls BB program and certainly would save money rather than trying to buy out someones contract.
Thirty two might be too many for this list for Trmale–so let’s pare it down to sixteen so he doesn’t wear himelf thin before spring football is over.
Top side of bracket
Terry Evans
Jennnifer Lopez
John Wooden
The Doobie Brothers
George Clooney
Hillary Clinton
Gene Hackman (Norman Dale from the Ithacca Warriors)
Cher
Bottom side of bracket
Terry Stotts
Bo Derek
Brent Musberger
Winston Churchill
Mike Gundy
Carmen Electra
Trmale himself
Phil Jackson

Bruce Pearl….He is a great coach with a very high winning percentage….He may have some violations but I doubt he will make them again. He is also a great recruiter! BRUCE PEARL PLEASE!!
bruce pearl. bruce pearl. bruce pearl. was Mr. Rogers of recruiting before this problem. he did a Dez because football program was screwed in a big way(see Lane Kiffin).
article regardings termination and the infractions at Tennessee–

I believe Bruce Pearl did commit his violations AGAIN – that is what really got him in trouble.
Screw Tubby Smith – he had his shot and gave OU the finger before he decided to satay at TU and eventually move to UGA and then on to UK.
I like El Prez’ ideas of Terry Evean or Terry Stotts.
I would also throw in Kevin Pritchard – obviously more of a front office guy than a bench coach but I bleieve that is what we have been lacking most in our basketball program. His forte is talent evaluation – something that has been lacking at OU of late. Also, his professionalism in the wake of his firing fromthePortland Trailblazers by that sports guru MS’s Paul Allen speaks for his integrity.
There are so many excellent candidates but certainly one would have to be the Butler Coach…he is young and a proven winner. Of course, getting him to leave (Butler) might be quite a problem.
Whether seriously or tongue-in-cheek, very surprised Scott Sutton (ORU), Doug Wojcik (TU), and Sean Sutton (OSU ex) aren’t somewhere in the bracket. Berry proves once again to Tulsa readers that he has trouble facing northeast.
For what it’s worth, coaches do not leave jobs at Missouri, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, etc. for a job at OU.
They dropped the ball Billy Gillespie was the hire, He turned UTEP back into a winner and NCAA tournamnet team,
Then turned A&M around and they were never good. Got railroaded in Kentucky, has been living in Dallas working with the AAU teams. Could have landed the players and revived the OU program.
Bruce Pearl just entered the job pool. How about him? I will bet that he would be happy to get another job and would take a significant pay cut to get it.
Very surprised Shaka Smart didn’t even make the play in games, when you are reaching for names like Eddie Sutton, Shari Coale and Byron Scott
All the God Father has to remember is that famous quote “those who fail to honor history are doomed to repeat it”
The perfect man has not even been mentioned. That would be Larry Brown. He has stated recently he wants to get back into coaching at the college level. He is 70, but a young 70. He has coached 2 College Teams, (UCLA and Kansas). He won a National title at KU and took the Bruins to the title game!! I don’t think he would drain OU for money, he justs wants to caoach again. It wouldn’t take him 3 or 4 years to get the Sooners back where they need to be!! Maybe 2 years. The only setback would be he probably would only be here 3 or 4 years!! He does not have a track record for staying a long time at one place!!
The next great OU coach is just up I-35 in Lawrence Kansas, no not Self his top assistant Dany Manning. Rock Chalk OU!!!
The idea of bracketology for Capel’s successor is innovative, creative, and lots of fun for all. Great work.
Forget Tad Boyle he has his dream job roughly 1 hour from where he grew up. I would go after Lon Krueger and also take a serious look at Greg Marshall at Wichita State. 50 wins the past two seasons (so far) beat Virginia tech in their gym (Duke didn’t)maybe Bobby Cremins from College of Charleston
Sanctions are likely to follow Bruce Pearl but only for 1 maybe 2 years and we won’t be any good in a year any way. Joe C might be a light gun shy though after the way things turned with Sampson and the NCAA.

I think Tubby Smith would be a good coach.
