Josh Heupel is going to be Bob Stoops replacement when he leaves. The defenses have not lived up to their potential since Mike Stoops left why would they ever let Venables run the team. If anything Venables should be fired but that won't happen unless the Sooners had a Texas like 5-7 season which just if it didn't happen in 09 just isn't likely to ever happen as long as Stoops is coaching. Best case scenario would be for someone to offer Venables a job somewhere and Arizona to tank at some point and Mike Stoops returns to OU. With Mike Stoops running the D and with Heupel's extensive knowledge of the OU offense they'd be unstoppable.

I believe that the person who will replace Bob Stoops when he retires will be his offensive coordinator at the time - Paul Thompson. Having joined the Sooner staff in 2012, Thompson has worked his way up in the coaching hierarchy. He follows in the footsteps of other former Sooner players who have joined the staff, then moved on to other jobs. Josh Heupel (who is now the head coach at Big XII rival BYU), Cale Gundy (the head coach at UCF), and Sam Bradford (who came back to OU after a career ending injury in 2014, then accepted the offensive coordinator position at Missouri in 2017). Paul Thompson will accept the head coaching position to begin the 2020 football season.

Who is talking tiers when it comes to coaching.apparently he did not see the top 50 football programs and how they ranked overall.i was not surprised ou was no.1 we have a rich tradition and everyone wants to beat ou every year.ou is like the yankees.you love them or you hate them.there is no liking the sooners. But i would say ohio state head coaching position is the most sought out job to have.and for your information ohio state is the riches football program in the country.i know that because i worked and lived in ohio and they have 150 million dollar football program.texas does not even come close.and i am a sooner but i know research will show you the top 50 richest football programs and ohio state is no.1and the most sought out job in the country.

According to Bruce, there are 3 or 4 tiers of teams, but Texas is the only team on tier 1 by itself. That is a totally ridiculous statement. Let's see, how many Big 12 championships does Texas have and how many does OU have? So no, not buying that theory.

I think there are three or four tiers of value when it comes to College football jobs. The # 1 job is Texas. Why? The largest athletic budget by 40 million. Second, they get who they want in Texas, every year with very few exceptions and the last few years have even got the 31 recruit from Ok. If their coaching staff was better they would have won 3 or 4 Championships out of the last 10.
The second tier consists of 10 to 12 teams. These schools come from the BCS conferences, have a decent tradition, and are perennial top 15 schools every year with an exception now and again (OU, Neb., Ohio State, USC, Florida, Alabama, LSU, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, with 2 or 3 more at the most. The third tier are the schools that rise up occasionally to contend for conference and sometimes national championships but are down as often as they are up. This group comprises of the next 25 teams. the last tier are teams that are never in the hunt for a championship, have a lifetime .500 record and are stepping stool jobs for coaches that might never have the chance otherwise.

For what it's worth, my top 5 coaching jobs: (difficult ...to...write...this 1) Texas 2) USC (well, when probation is not a factor) 3) Oklahoma 4)Ohio State 5) Florida.

OU gets the nod over Ohio State because of OU's proximity to recruiting the state of Texas. Florida would rank higher but for the quality in-state competition (FSU, Miami) causes them to share the limelight. Alabama not on the list only due to the the unrealistic expectations of their fan base. And as I mentioned USC is on the list only in the longer term. They are kings of one of the best recruiting areas and really have no true competition on the west coast.

Really hard to pick 5, there are so many other worthy contenders...

Keith, on your top five coaching jobs question...the usual suspects these days does seem to include Florida. Probably has to do with recruiting base, location, and resources. Texas is always on that list as well, for the same reasons. Well, except maybe for location, but that might just be me being sarcastic.

Other than Texas though, the list is probably a matter of opinion. I think pretty much everyone would include Texas, much as I hate to say it. Most everyone would also probably include Oklahoma, and if they didn't, they'd have it just outside the top five, and most assuredly in the top 10. USC would probably make the list if they weren't under lock and key at the moment. Other possibilities would be, again, some of the usual suspects. Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, others depending on who you're talking to at the moment.
