for this blog to call his career "forgettable" is absolutely unthinkable. I was a young high school freshman football player in Oklahoma and a budding OU fan when Dupree had his spectacular freshman season at OU and I will never forget that. His career was certainly short-lived but anything but forgettable. I along with scores of OU fans from that time have never forgotten Marcus Dupree.

Dupree was a great talent that missed greatness! Coach
Switzer did everything he could to help Marcus develop and push himself to the next level. He decided to take the road most traveled on. Blame others for not being successful. I wished he had wanted it more. Too easy for him in high school and he just disappointed himself and the football world. Nearly 30 years later, we are still talking about him.

This clip just shows how confused this young man was at this time in his life. He probably should have stayed in southern Mississippi, close to home. By far the greatest running back I have ever seen. I'll never forget him putting it on Texas in the Cotton Bowl, lol...

I remember this time well. I saw then and I still think it is true that this was a young man who did not have the work ethic to go with the talent. And when Barry pushed him, he regressed, he rebelled and he ultimately could not come back from a knee injury that should not have been career ending. What a shame. Were there no people around him who could have helped mentor this young man? At this press conference he was alone. Did he not find anyone along the way who could help him in his transition into this public figure?

He had so much potential that Switzer dedicated a whole chapter about Marcus in his book "Bootleggers Boy". What I remember is how all of us thought we were seeing another Earl Campbell.

Barry was tight...he was POTENTIALLY the best running back of all time.

The hype surrounding Dupree when he committed to the Sooners was just amazing. He was supposed to be Greg Pruitt, Joe Washington, and Billy Sims all rolled into one. Adrian Peterson before there was an Adrian Peterson. He was said to be that good. And for an all too brief time, he was.

I don't know who was ultimately to blame for his famous flame-out at Oklahoma, but I suspect it was mostly the fact that he just wasn't ready for the level of hype and attention. It was unlike anything I think anyone had ever seen up to then, even for Oklahoma. Switzer I don't think helped matters very much, especially after he publicly called Dupree out for being overweight following a bowl game loss to Arizona State. I'm sure if everyone had it to do over again they would do it differently. It's a true shame what happened.

I plan on watching this show if I can. I hope anyone not old enough to remember Dupree will watch it as well. You might find yourself wondering if that isn't Adrian Peterson you're seeing in those old clips. For all too brief a time, Marcus Dupree was that good.
