Nick is correct. Stoops told Bob Bowlsby (Iowa AD) that he would come to Iowa, but he needed to know the day of the interview. Bowlsby supposedly declined to make an outright offer, as he wanted to interview a few more folks, and Stoops signed with Okie the next day.

Oklahoma offered Stoops and excellent package but said he had to sign before he left the room. If he did not the deal was off the table. I don’t even think he interviewed with Iowa. I believe he was supposed to interview with Iowa the following day. The deal Oklahoma put together would have been hard for anyone to pass up. I, like many others, sometimes wonder what the Iowa football program would have been like with Stoops.

Not to dispute hawk1, only a vague memory of another rumor. The Iowa AD slow played Stoops. Castiglione knew what he wanted, and moved fast. As I remember, Castiglione arranged for all the key players (Boren, regents, etc) to meet with Stoops, someplace like Dallas. They made their offer, at the end of the interview.

Stoops told them he had committed to interview with Iowa, the next day or so, and felt obligated. Stoops went through the Iowa interview. The AD told Stoops he had more candidates to interview and would get back to Stoops later. Stoops then called Castiglione, to accept.

Rumor has it that a contract was drawn up and all that was left to do was have Stoops sign the dotted line to become the coach of the Hawkeyes. However, when the athletic department officials went to visit Stoops they forgot to bring the contract and later that day Oklahoma offered the job to Stoops.

You know, I don’t remember how that whole thing went down, but it seems like Bob didn’t really want to go through the whole interview process – he just wanted them to offer the job. When that didn’t happen, he took the OU offer, and Iowa’s search committee “settled” on Ferentz. Bobby and Mike are still well regarded around here, to be sure, and though Coach Ferentz took awhile to gain some momentum, I’d say you’re right, in the end it really worked out well for everyone involved.
