So... the problem is that they don't want to have to choose between their religion and a football game. OK, so I am completely psyched about the game too but sometimes we make CHOICES based on our priorities and sometimes you don't get everything you want. So, which is more important? Basically they are saying the game is more important but they don't want to feel guilty about skipping the holiday, so make it work for them. If we had to accomodate for everyone we would never get anything done. If the game doesn't jive with the holiday and you skip the game for your relgion maybe God will give you extra brownie points if you don't whine about missing the game? If the texas fans skip the holiday for the game maybe OU will get the brownie points??

The fact that both of these schools are publicly funded ends this discussion. Liberals all over the country have forced the removal of all religious symbols. Therefore religious holidays should not be considered when scheduling football games. Hows that for your separation of church and state?

Wow! I'm reading this from Chicago. My son is a freshman at UT; he's Jewish as our his parents. As I understand it, this "issue" has been raised before, at Texas and elsewhere. And yes, just like a lot of Christians only celebrate Christmas for the gift exchange and/or observe Easter having a big family brunch, a lot of Jews spend every shabbat doing all sorts of other things than sitting in shul. The question is, what do both schools stand for? What does each profess to "teach" its students? Maybe we should all check that out first and then consider if the issue merits consideration for further discussion. Regardless, we are a still free nation and therefore each and every one of us is entitled to an opinion. Hook 'Em Horns!

I am not a Jew, but I am a native Oklahoman and am embarrassed by some of you. Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement, and there is not time to explain the significance here, but there is not really a day on the Christian calendar to compare. When the Jewish students state that they are in a quandry about having to choose, they are simply stating the truth. Surely you can at least relate to their love of the game. You may not share their perspective, and that is fine. But show some class. And tolerance. There may come a day when you need a little tolerance.

I am not Jewish and was once married to a Jewish woman whose family was very devout. I am not totally versed on the rules if such a change were to be accommodated, but possibly, could this game be played on Sunday at noon and compete with the NFL? OU and Texas would then command the full attention of the entire college football world, the fair would be ongoing, and folks could travel to Dallas on Sat morning? Jewish fans of both schools could celebrate Yom Kippur from hotel rooms or closed rooms at restaurants. Nothing can probably occur at this close of date, and make no mistake, making a change only a year out is tough, but if given charge of the situation, I would at least investigate if there is an accommodation. Christians can go to church in Dallas on Sunday if they have a mind to, the Dallas church community would likely enjoy the added attendance, and faith of all our citizens could be respected.

I agree with another poster some of the insensitive comments on this forum are a bit over the top.

I'm highly offended by the insensitive comments here. IS this indicative of the nature of OU and its students? I guess I wouldn't expect a great deal of sensitivity from people in a state that keeps electing that dolt Tom Coburn to the Senate, but really, I expect that if the Texas OU game was held on Easter or Christmas these same people would be screaming.

Maybe all the Jewish donors to OU should quit giving money to support this institution of lower learning.

Whatever! These heathens won't stop if they get this. Next these Jesus killers will want a national holiday! And we all know that nobody in our country will ever favor one religion over another and do something like that!
