LB Corey Nelson on the spot

With Austin Box likely to miss at least a month with a disc issue in his back, defensive coordinator Brent Venables will ask one of his true freshman linebackers to step into the rotation.

The favorite to fill that role is Corey Nelson, who has impressed so far in the preseason.

“Between teams and backing up, Corey has played really, really well and he has picked up the defense really well,” Venables said. “I anticipate him to get into a rotation.”

The Sooners are expected to give Jaydan Bird snaps at middle linebacker behind Tom Wort and Daniel Franklin. That could give Nelson some opportunity backing up Travis Lewis on the weakside, where Bird previously was taking the majority of his reps.
