Gerald McCoy back in OKC, and other news and notes from Sooner Nation

Former Sooner defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, the No. 3 overall pick of Tampa Bay in this year’s NFL Draft, was back in Oklahoma City today, taking part in pledge drive by Farmers insurance and the March of Dimes, raising money for research aimed at preventing premature births and improving the lives of newborn babies.

“Being honest, I didn’t know what was going on (with the March of Dimes),” McCoy told The Oklahoman during the event this morning. “But come to find out about it, it’s kind of a sensitive and close area for me, because I have a 4-year-old daughter, and she was a premature baby. So, I love helping out anyway I can.”

* Jermaine Gresham probable to start: Ex-OU standout tight end Jermaine Gresham is expected to start immediately at tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals, assuming he continues to perform well and show his knee is healthy in preseason camp.

Gresham was the No. 21 overall pick of the Bengals in this year’s NFL Draft.

* Malcolm Kelly could be cut: Three years after being drafted in the second round by the Washington Redskins, former OU wideout Malcolm Kelly’s days in the capital city could be numbered. Speculation out of Washington is that Kelly won’t make the team, due to his injury issues. Kelly, one of the best wideouts ever to pass through Norman, has 28 career catches in the NFL.

* DE Chris Martin headed to Gainesville: Despite rampant speculation he was considering OU, Chris Martin, one of the top-rated outside linebacker recruits in the country, is leaving Cal and headed to Florida instead.

Martin announced his decision on his Facebook page.

“God has granted me a second chance,” he wrote. “A chance I cannot mess up. With that said. Go Gators. Thank You to everyone and all the coaches who showed their interest in me.”

The Oakland (Ca.) native signed to play with the Golden Bears in February. He had originally committed to Notre Dame in 2009 as a junior, but reopened the recruiting process after the school fired Charlie Weis.

* Lynn Katoa in trouble again: Former Colorado linebacker Lynn Katoa, who at one time seemed headed to OU, is in trouble with the law again.

On probation for his involvement in a 2008 fight, Katoa was arrested again, this time accused of head-butting a former teammate.

Police say 21-year-old Katoa head-butted placekicker Aric Goodman, outside a Boulder bar early Sunday. Katoa was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assault and violating his probation.

According to police, Katoa challenged Goodman to a fight because Katoa was mad Goodman didn’t help him get into the bar. Police say Katoa head-butted Goodman in the forehead and that Goodman didn’t hit back.

Katoa was regarded as one of country’s top linebackers in 2008, drawing strong interest from OU. Instead, he signed with CU, but was cut by the Buffs last year.

GMac…Always knew you had great character
Jermain…Terrific story, wish you the best.
Chris Martin…Bad choice, should of been a SOONER.
How do you spell stupid…K A T O A…

Just my opinion…

Malcolm was doomed from the moment he ran the 40 at his pro-day. I hope he moves on and a team takes a chance on his talent.
