Mortensen says Cowboys could call Stoops

Brian Kelly packing up his things for South Bend still didn’t end the speculation over Bob Stoops’ coaching future.

This time, though, the possible destination is quite a bit more attractive than Notre Dame.

On an ESPN radio show Friday, NFL reporter Chris Mortensen speculated that if the Cowboys fired Wade Phillips, a possibility inching closer to reality with a difficult closing schedule and waning playoff hopes, Oklahoma’s head man could get a call.

His exact words: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would have Stoops “in his discussions,” should the job open up.

Mortensen stressed that to even call the move a rumor was a leap of faith, but did say the speculation came with a “little bit of knowledge.”

Saturday, Mortensen revisited the idea in a Twitter post, again referencing Jimmy Johnson, who Jones hired away from Miami in 1989 and won two Super Bowls with.

“As for Cowboys, if Wade goes, sources say he prefers some in 40′s. Maybe a back to the future deal like a Bob Stoops. Not saying Stoops will be Cowboys coach – he has said he’s staying put, as has Urban Meyer. But J. Johnson and B Switzer. 3 Super Bowls,” read Mortensen’s posts.

Unlike the original Stoops to Notre Dame rumor, Mortensen suggests the interest is, at this point, only one-sided.

But for Oklahoma, which is home to plenty of Cowboys fans, college coaching rumors don’t get much more interesting than that.

Leaving for Notre Dame was a lateral move, if not a step down. But an NFL job with one of the league’s premier franchises? Stoops would be sacrificing the comfy job security he enjoys in Norman, but if Jerry Jones’ name pops up on his cell phone, he’d have to at least answer, right?

Here we go again. Forget it already. Stoops isn’t recruiting the #1 class just to let someone else coach them. He’s not going anywhere and I’m sure he’s thrilled to death to be tied to another coaching rumor during the hottest time for recruiting. Thanks Dave, now Stoops is going to have to call the kids he’s after to reassure them he’s not going anywhere.

Coaching the Dallas Cowboys would be more attractive than coaching Notre Dame?

Not while Jerry Jones owns the team it wouldn’t!

I’m pretty sure that Stoops would answer the phone if Jerry Jones called. Stoops has said things like he’ll listen to a lot of stuff. He’d be smart to answer, but dumb to take the job in the end. Stoops is the CEO of OU Football. With the cowboys, he’d be the day manager. If Jerry Jones wouldn’t yield to the Tuna, he’ll never yield. And thats not a good situation.

I hope Jerry does call, and Stoops accepts. Stooper Ball has come to the
end of the line, with a lot of fans. If Stanford takes OU to the wood shed
in prime-time, that should be the icing on the cake. OU fans are sick
and tired of getting their a** kicked, and the DO making excuse’s for them,
(OU) and propping up Stoops when it is as plain as the nose on your face
he can’t get the job done anymore. Hit the bricks bobby boy!

Sounds like J. Adams is talking for OU fans, like he’s not one of them. So J. Adams, if your not an OU fan shut your stinkin Pie Hole under your nose! Your to STUPID to be posting about OU football! I bet your ears look like butt cheaks on the side of your head! And you know what’s in the middle. RIGHT? ASZHOLE!!!

My sources tell me that Mort is coming out of the closet! He is having an affair with Adam – the espn guy with the ND scoop. They have secretly been taping NFL players for years in the showers. My sources also advise that ESPN has been sold to Simon Crowell and will now be the biggest idiots reality sport show. Stay tuned…you never know what my sources will come up with next!

[...] Bob Stoops? C’mon, man! [...]

Brian: you call J. Adams “stupid?” I’d suggest you might
want to reread your vitriolic diatribe, and then apologize.
Your writing smacks of that of a grade schooler, and not a very smart one at that. “Your to stupid…” Really.

Nah Hey ron no hullet, “Your to stupid” and grade schooler crap belongs to the image in your mirror. Brian is spot on and you and adams are OU haters. So go reread anything adams has ever tried to speculate about, as his as well as yours is pure BS. Find some where else for your slamming and take your “vitriolic diatribe” (big words for a little man) and place where the don’t shine. I’m sure you need a can opened on you.

Brad, just like Reggie Jackson once told Mickey Rivers:
I don’t like picking fights with people who can’t read
and write their own name. That shoe seems to fit you,
also. … And me, a Sooner hater? Oh, my, how far off the
mark you are. As far as ‘big words’, would you have one
write in monosyllabics so people like you and Brian could
better understand? And lastly, I think my image in the
mirror reflects quite nicely, thank you very much. Have a
great day.

No way or form will this even be contemplated by Stoops. JJ’s attention deficit disorder rears its ugly head when he doesn’t take his medicine. He suddenly thinks he is a super bowl winning coach and one of the greatest talent scouts in the league. Stoops is having a good chuckle right now.

Scott – great point. The Cowboys will never rise again
until Jerry J et co are gone. Were I a coach, no way
would I work for him. Short of having it in my contract
that he would not only stay off the sidelines, but out
of the stadium on game days. Jones thinks he’s a combi-
nation cheerleader, coach, and front office genius. And
thinks everyone should bow down to him since he built the
new stadium. Everyone, including the coach. Can’t see Bob
Stoops doing that.

Big Loss Sponge Bob would fit in nicely in Dallas. He would continue the tradition of not winning many post season games.

Could not thank you adequately for the articles on your web page. I know you add a lot of time and energy into these and hope you know how considerably I appreciate it. I hope I am able to do the identical thing person at some point.
