Practice report (9-1-09)

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson provided the fireworks Tuesday.

Wilson proclaimed that converted tight end Brody Eldridge is already just as good a center as Jon Cooper was last season.

“He’s as good as the guy that played last year, right now,” Wilson said. “He blocks those big guys we got who are as good as anybody we’ll see, right now.”

When asked if he really was saying that Eldridge, despite only playing the position for a month, was as good as Cooper, a 4-year starter who earned first-team All-Big 12 honors last season, Wilson didn’t budge.

“He’s our best lineman,” Wilson said of Eldridge. “Trent (Williams) is the most talented guy, but Brody is the most consistent.”

Looks like Eldridge is at center to stay.

Other news and notes:
* DT DeMarcus Granger is another month at least away from making an impact. Still not in the shape he needs to be to play. If he does play in the next month, it will be in spots.

Said Bob Stoops, “DeMarcus is still a ways away. How much he gets probably will be more limited.”

* Ryan Broyles is back in the slot, after practicing wideout a lot of the fall. Mossis Madu will spell Broyles in the slot. At wideout, the Sooners will rotate Tennell, Caleb, Miller and Cam Kenney.

* Up to 10 freshmen will see the field Saturday. Cornerback Demontre Hurst, free safety Marcus Trice, offensive guard Tyler Evans, wide receiver Jaz Reynolds, defensive tackle Jamarkus McFarland and linebackers Ronnell Lewis and Jaydan Bird are all likely to play. Safety Javon Harris, cornerback Gabe Lynn and offensive tackle Josh Aladenoye also could play, but are not locks.

* R. Lewis is really looking good at MLB, behind Ryan Reynolds and Austin Box. Brent Venables feels good about Lewis there, specifically his physicality. Despite being 18 or so years old, Lewis is an imposing-looking athlete.

* Stoops praised CBs Jamell Fleming and Jon Nelson. Both have been overlooked some because of the impressive true freshmen DBs. But Fleming and Nelson have both quietly had solid camps and will be factors this season.

Kevin Wilson is prone to double-talk.

OU better show up in Arlington with their Sh*t together
or get ready to be embarrassed. BYU won’t be awed by the
Sooners and they also know how over-hyped the Sooners D
will be. All they had to do was watch the BSU Fiesta Bowl
win to get a game plan for Sat. Stoops defense bite’s on every trick in the book. If Venables and Stoops do their
usual prep. it will be a long night at the Jerry Dome. They
better respect these guys from Provo and start trying to
make their fans have confidence in them that they should be
taken serious by playing 60 minutes of heads up football
like they did against Texas Tech. last season. Go Sooners.
