Spikes called OU dirty?
Earlier this week, Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes called OU the dirtiest team he’d ever seen. But judging from this video, where he takes a punch at OU’s Trent Williams after the play, Spikes might want to take a look in the mirror.

I am a huge OU fan, but it kinda looks like Trent tried to do a WWE wrestling move by falling on him when he is down – elbow extended. I dunno…looks kinda fishy to me.
As I recall, there was also a time—I think in the third quarter—when OU was driving with its no-huddle offense and had the Florida defense on its heels. A Florida player (not Spikes) slapped the ball after officials had set it at the line of scrimmage and as the Sooners were approaching the line of scrimmage. It seemed fairly obvious at the time that the player slapped the ball so that the defense would have time to adjust or catch its breath without burning a timeout. Somehow, there was no flag for unsportsmanlike conduct, or even off-sides, but the move was, dare I say, “dirty.”
Funny, because nic harris should have been thrown out of the game for his thuggery. Also, the guy didn’t just decide to throw the punch, he was retalliating. Sooners are dirty and everybody outside of ok knows it.
Last I heard!!! Football was a contact sport!!
Watch them several times and then tell me who’s team used more chop blocks and blatant take downs during the game.
Again though, Tell the gator to change their diapers!!!
Its a man game
The footage speaks for itself. Spikes did not like the fact that he got hit with a good block so he takes a cheap shot at Williams. His reaction is a typical one that athletes who are overly full of themselves display when the tables are turned on them.
Spikes is a better man than all of us since he has spent time with Tim Teblowme. We should all listen to this deciple of the second coming of Christ and all be glad we at least lived in the same time as Timmy.
Football is a nasty, blood, sweat and high emotions game. Im sure Spikes wasn’t the only person to do something like that during that game. So don’t act like The Sooners are such great American Citizens, need i say Rhett Bomar. Florida won the national championship and the lil sooners fans got there feelings hurt so all of the “Sooner Nation” are having to find something to grip about, like it would of changed the game with a penalty. Find something better to write about. Like maybe how OU can survive without there offensive line coming back, only considering it’s the only position that will make or break your team, besides secondary. Florida needs to get a handle on there team problems, but maybe OU can learn something from them, considering they have won it 2 out of 3 years, and possibly 3 out of 4.

Actually, if you go onto the original espn.com article and read the nationwide comments on this story, you’ll find that a huge majority of college football fans are in disagreement with what Spikes said (they also had an article that said OU fans were on a list as some of the most obnoxious fans, and people from all across the country came to OU’s defense. I read about 100 comments and only two said they disliked OU fans. The rest said that they though OU fans were classy, nice, and knowledgable about football. If you disagree, you can go take it up with the posters there). I looked at the profiles of a couple of the people that said things similar to what you said (just out of curiosity), and there were 4 that listed the Gators as their team and 2 that listed the Cowboys.
So, your “everybody outside of ok knows it” argument isn’t very sound. In fact, I’d say the Sooners take more criticism IN state than out of it. There’s a reason they call them “in-state rivalries”, because OU and OSU are always in competition with each other every season for fans, recruits, media coverage, etc. That just makes everything more heated. After the post had been up on espn.com for a couple of hours, people stopped posting… because no one outside of Oklahoma and Florida cared. To believe otherwise would be delusional.
What’s the problem with Spikes calling it like it is when it comes to playing against Ou? Everyone that has played against Ou knows this as a fact. Did Spikes say that they (Florida) are better than that or that his team isn’t afraid to give what they get in return? Maybe that’s why yOU guys are in the position yOU are in when it comes to playing against REAL TEAMS in the bowl games. Only thing is, it looks as if Ou gets upset when the opposing team plays yOUr kinda football back at yOU and beats yOU doing it. Therefore articles like this and the crying are non stop untill the next season starts.
Shoot the messenger not the message… wow, you nailed him! Doesn’t take away from OU being a dirty team, JT.
Yea,you’re right, the tone of the game was set on the first play when your d-back grabs Manny Johnson by the jersey and he still makes the reception; followed by personal foul on D. Robinson for being to rough for the ACC Refs, followed by a holding penalty, followed by Florida D-back hitting Manny on the sidelines before the ball gets there, and that was the first possession of the game. Look at it you Florida crybabies the ball hits your safety in the back, what got their first your safety or the ball? By the way guys he also planted his helmet into his face in some leagues that’s called a personal foul. What a screwing we took with you good buddies the ACC refs. It went on and on. Here’s one for you look at the second half kick off, your return man steps out of bounds twice after he catches the ball, now how in world can anyone miss that? Oh I forgot the SEC and the ACC are like kissing cousins aren’t they? Florida, FSU, Georgia,Georgia Tech,S.Carolina,Clemson, and on and on. That crew have never been allowed to officiate that game. There is an obvious bias in that situation. It was a subtle screwing by that crew. We would have whipped your ass without their help.
LMAO at OU incriminating themselves by showing exactly what Spikes was talking about. That O lineman did an atomic elbow and his head and tried to act like he was just falling. You guys are hilarious. You should also show the Percy leg pull and the knee on Tebows helmet Harris did.
ok i hate florida with passion and spikes doesnt have any oom to talk vi the video but…. somewhere in the 4th quater one of ous safteis made an ankle tackle and rolled with his ankle after the play i laughed cause he got away with it…tebag is a very bad sport taunting ou after the game some role model espn puts him out to be i surely hope he gets hurt this year and to prove florida is not anything without him… ou will win this year i guarntee it
Hitting a player in the helmet with an open hand is not
exactly serious, but the umpire should have called it, unless Trent was doing something all along and kept getting
away with it and Spikes decided he’d had enough. There’s two
sides to this story. If OU had scored TD’s each time they
were in the red zone and won, this wouldn’t be an issue.
We’d put Spikes in the same class as Gresham and go on.
Are you serious? The gooners couldn’t beat the Midwest City Bombers if they played fair.
Plus over 50% of their players come from Texas anyway.
Go Texas Tech!!!
When you gator fans have won as many national championships as OU and when you have won 47 games in a row, you can then act haughty. Until then, I would not attempt to feel superior. Also, let’s not forget that the gators have not won as many conference championships as OU. Now, you will argue what a superior conference the SEC is to other conferences. Well, the old Big Eight (which OU was part of) had three of its teams ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the nation at the end of the bowl season. Has the SEC ever approached that record? By the way, I am a native Floridian.
Its not a matter of the Past, its what is happening now, and right now in the Meyer Era at Florida, he is dominating. Say what you would like, Meyer has done what Stoops hasn’t done in a shorter amount of time, win 2 National Championship(s), who gives a crap about Conference championship. Im sure if you where to ask Bob Stoops what is more important to win, a National Championship or conference title, which one you think he would say was more important? what i thought….
oh and did i mention Tebow(or whatever you clever people call him with your own nicknames) is back, and hungry for a undefeated season.
I personally like the fact that a linebacker from the SEC is calling our team dirty, from what I recall this is football and not soccer and I want & like to see that kind of attitude and approach to the game. All Trent Williams did was finish his block so Spikes needs to toughen up because he got man handled by a future NFL lineman and if he thinks Trent Williams is dirty wait until he makes it to the NFL because I promise you those guys are worse.
You never hear about a Stoops team playing dirty football. Just don’t hear it. Haven’t heard anyone accuse OU of dirty football since Stoops has been here. He wouldn’t put up with it. This guy has a big mouth. That is the story.
The majority of these comments have gotten off topic as to the question “is OU a dirty team?” We have to look at who said the comment, one player from one of 14 teams OU played last season. What Spikes has done, is increased the internet activity associated with his name, and thus the number of potential teams looking at him. But the truth is he failed to support his comment with an exact moment, his team has not come out to support his claim, nor his coaches which indicates his opinion is his alone.
Jared… Nice comment! I never thought about that. I guess it’s true that all publicity is good publicity, unfortunately. I’m just hoping that our Sooners get even hungrier for a rematch!
tebow will lose.. Florida will lose. somebody aim to beat them as hard as brick as they can.
I can bet he will passion and cryin in front of tv again… I cant wait to watch him cryin again.
Diehard Sooner Fan
micheal, if you rewatch the video, you will see that trent williams was KNOCKED down by another player, after his block on spikes, and he hit the ground, he did not elbow spikes as you see to think
Looked to me like #71 held Spikes and kinda horse-collared him to the ground. It does appear that #71 also threw an elbow or shoulder at Spikes as he were on the ground. #71 didn’t really have to go down but did and did so to hit Spikes intentionally.
Spikes probably should’ve been flagged for retaliating but what kind of warped logic led to this video’s selection to illustrate Spikes is some kind of hypocrite? He was RETALIATING for a behind-the-back-takedown by Williams (that could’ve been flagged as a hold) and subsequent belly flop on his head! That’s not dirty play? That nobody was flagged here isn’t the crime, nor is the fact that in a perfect world, Spikes would let his play, and team’s win, speak for itself. It’s the fact homers, who wear crimson-colored glasses and, apparently, often get their panties in a bunch, actually pass for sports writers.
If any of you have played football at the collegiate level, you would understand the situations you face out on the field. It’s so easy for spectators to “monday morning quarterback” and scrutinize every play. I understand it’s a part of the game and always will be, but at some point, it’s why we love to play the game and why fans love to watch it. It’s a battle and it’s intense. There’s no excuse for so called “dirty” plays but when intensity levels are that high and you’re keyed up for a big game, some guys act out of character and make “bone-headed” moves. I think a lot of people read-in too much into every situation and quite frankly I believe it is starting to put a damper on the game. I understand that fans are more involved than ever before, but good grief! It’s still a game, and majority of the young men playing are 18-23. Let ‘em play and enjoy the game like it was meant to be enjoyed. I get it, some people live for controversy, but it gets old and what credibility do most have to make their accusations? God bless all. BOOMER!
Hey Carl, why don’t you go back to school and learn how to spell, and then come back and talk your trash? And no way the gators win 3 of 4, they won’t have the home cookin’ this year on the west coast.
Boomer sooner is probably one of if not the dumbest things I have ever heard. I live in Oklahoma but have never and never will be an Oklahoma fan. (Some) of the fans I know of have talked such critical trash and acted so arrogant that it has turned me copmpletely away. It is not the plasyers themselves-they are just like any other team trying to win, but having fun while they are in college. SOME of the fans are the rudest I have ever seen.

Pot, meet kettle.
The tone for that game was set on the first play, and at Florida’s instigation. Nevermind a leader for a team with 35 arrests in the last 3 years calling anyone else dirty. Florida is putting Oklahoma in the 80s and Miami in the 90s to shame.
