SI love… for Mizzou

Got the latest Sports Illustrated in the mail box.

College Football Preview.

Chase Daniel and his Missouri Tiger pals on the cover.

Hmm. Somebody at SI tiring of the Sooners?

There’s much love for the Big 12 in the SI season preview.  Three league teams in the top 10, including the Sooners. Five in the Top 15.

But it’s the Tigers, the two-time losers to OU a year ago, who get coverboy status and top billing at No. 4 in the mag’s preseason Top 25.

Starting from the top, it’s Georgia No. 1, Ohio State No. 2, USC No. 3 and Mizzou No. 4. Lofty status for a program that has never won a Big 12 title.

Florida checks in at No. 5, followed by OU at 6.

I understand the appeal of the Tigers. They’ve got a lot of players back, including a Heisman Trophy frontrunner in QB Daniels. They’ve got a favorable schedule that doesn’t include OU, although that opener against Illinois in St. Louis should not be taken for granted. And they’re a sexy new sensation.

All that I get.

But I wouldn’t rank them ahead of OU. The Sooners are all those things, with the exception of new, and those two decisive wins over Mizzou a year ago can’t be dismissed.

If anything, they should be the guide… for now.
