Men’s hoops: Tourney talk in Philly

By Scott Wright

Here are some stories out of Philadelphia, to give you an idea of what they’re saying up there about the Oklahoma-St. Joseph’s first-round NCAA Tournament game.

St. Joseph’s, Oklahoma ready for first meeting: from the Philly Inquirer.

And Philly Daily News columnist Dick Jerardi, a long-time college basketball writer, touches on the fact that three Philadelphia teams made the Tournament.

Men’s hoops: Recruiting tidbit

By Scott Wright

Oklahoma is still in the running for Lilburn, Ga., wing Wesley Witherspoon. The 6-foot-8, 185-pound high school senior is still looking at about eight different schools, including Oklahoma, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Arizona and Texas.

Witherspoon has two official visits remaining, but his mother, Carolyn, said Monday that the family has made unofficial visits to virtually all of the nearby schools recruiting her son and he will use at least one of his official visits to go somewhere farther away.

She said the family will decide whether to use the visit for a trip to Arizona, Oklahoma or Colorado. But not getting a visit doesn’t mean the school is out of the picture. Carolyn said the OU coaches have been keeping up with Wesley since last summer and he gets along with them well.

Men’s hoops: Sooner ‘dogs

By Scott Wright

OU is a 4 1/2 point underdog today against Texas. Not bad, considering they’ve lost to the Horns twice by an average of 13 1/2 points.

Maybe the bookmakers feel the Sooners are playing well, though they must have missed the disaster that was OU’s 54-49 win over Colorado Friday. Still, the Longhorns haven’t been terribly impressive lately, so the Sooners should feel like they’ve got a good chance.

In bracketology news, OU is still holding strong as a No. 7 seed. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has them as a 7 going to Birmingham, where they’re paired up with Miami, then the No. 2 seed Georgetown.

CollegeHoops.net, the Sporting News and Yahoo! have the Sooners at a 7, while Fox Sports, Sports Illustrated and Bracketography have OU at an 8 seed.

Jerry Palm has the Sooners at 7 against South Alabama, though not everyone else is as high on South Alabama. But Palm has OU going to Raleigh and paired with the No. 2 seed Duke. That’s not desirable on many levels.

Men’s hoops: Halftime blog

Longar Longar is wearing black shoes.

That’s about the most exciting thing that has taken place in the first 20 minutes of basketball between Oklahoma and Colorado in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals here at Sprint Center.

The Sooners are up 26-21 and Longar’s black shoes have him on pace for a triple-double — a rather dubious one. Seven rebounds, six points and five turnovers
