Golf: OU men finish 11th

LAKESIDE, Calif. — Paced by 2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Jesse Schutte’s 17th-place standing, the Sooners finished the seventh annual Barona Collegiate Cup in 11th place at the 7,393-yard, par-72 Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif., on Tuesday.

Schutte (-1) carded rounds of 71,71 and 73 to pace the Sooners who fired rounds of 292 (+4), 298 (+10) and 298 (+10) in finishing at +24 (808) for the tournament.

Five squads in the tournament were ranked in the latest Golfstat top-50 poll.

Texas A&M led wire-to-wire, finishing first after a final-round 17-under-par 271. The Aggies played the 54-hole event at 37-under-par for a 20-shot victory over second-place San Diego State.

Overnight co-leader Nacho Elvira of A&M carded a final-round 66 for a three-shot victory.

Eric Durbin and Phillip Bryan both finished in a tie for 47th at +10 for the Sooners. A stroke back was freshman Liam Logan who fired a final-round 79.

Rounding out the OU scoring was Ben Blundell, who recovered nicely from a bout with food poisoning, with a second-day 73 after having to officially withdraw from the event on Monday morning.

OU returns to the links on April 11 when the Sooners travel to Tempe, Ariz., for the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
