Men’s hoops: Pacing Longar

By Scott Wright

Longar Longar was limping again Thursday. He was suited up for practice, but he wasn’t going to go through much of it.

That will be the story with him for the remainder of the season — keep it light in practice, go hard in the game. Basically, Longar is intelligent enough and knows the system well enough that he can study up on the next opponent, go through some walk-throughs and be prepared to give 15-20 minutes on game day.

Longar said he was hurting Thursday, and that’ll likely be the case the rest of the season, unless the broken bone above his right ankle heals significantly before the year is out.

Saturday’s game will be interesting for Longar. Some might have forgotten that this will be his first game back in Lubbock since the infamous elbow incident. Seems strange, considering OU and Texas Tech have played twice since that game, but both were in Norman. We’ll see what kind of reaction the crowd at United Spirit Arena has for Big L.

Men’s hoops: Bubble Watch

By Scott Wright

Today, we’re officially into the second half of February, so I think it’s fair to start talking NCAA Tournament bubble. And that’s convenient, since OU’s right on top of it now.

I still think it will take a 9-7 record in Big 12 play to get them in. An 8-8 mark might do it if they can win a couple Big 12 Tourney games. And the Sooners need to avoid bad losses. For instance, losing at Nebraska (Feb. 27) or at home to Missouri (March 8 ) will be damaging.

But the Sooners can afford to lose Saturday at Texas Tech, or to Texas A&M (March 1) or Baylor (next Tuesday) in Norman. But they’ve got to win two of those three. At Oklahoma State (March 5) is a toss-up, because of the rivalry aspect.
