Men’s hoops: Recruiting update
By Scott Wright
I’ll try to have some more on this in the paper this week, but here’s a look at a few of the guys OU coach Jeff Capel is looking at to potentially fill Keith Clark’s open scholarship next season.
I should first point out that Clark was hanging around Lloyd Noble Center Tuesday afternoon and apparently watched a practice. The door is not closed on Clark coming back to OU if he can get his grades in order at Rose State College. But OU is still looking at some possibilities and have extended offers to a few players.
Brad Tinsley is a 6-foot-3 combo guard at Oregon City, Ore., High School. He had signed last November with Pepperdine, but was granted his release when it was announced that the coaching staff would not be retained. Talking to his father, the biggest question here might be whether or not Tinsley wants to leave the West Coast. He has four visits to take and won’t make any decisions before the end of his season around the middle of March.
Juan Pattillo is a 6-foot-7 forward who is the leading scorer for the College of Southern Idaho, the top-ranked junior-college in the nation right now. He’s averaging more than 17 points per game. He’s more of a perimeter player, with the capability to shoot the 3 and defend multiple positions. Pattillo is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 10 junior-college player in the country.
Kevin Galloway is a 6-foot-6 point guard and Pattillo’s teammate at CSI. Yes, he’s really 6-6, or at least close to it, so I’m told. He’s also averaging as many assists per game as points, which isn’t too shabby, considering he’s averaging 8.3 points per game. His assist numbers are crazy — 198 through 24 games, and a 2.5-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He’s not a shooter — he has only attempted 13 3-pointers this season — but he can get to the basket when he wants to.
These aren’t the only guys OU is looking at, but they’re probably the top of the list. Considering OU has Ryan Wright, Kyle Cannon and Orlando Allen coming in next season, I’d expect they go for a point guard. But they need scoring, too, so anyone who can hit a jump shot with consistency is going to get a look.
The spring signing period runs from April 16-May 21. More to come later.
