Track: OU team breaks school record

The University of Oklahoma men’s distance medley relay broke the school record in the event with a time of 9:42.35, breaking the previous record of 9:42.88 in the first day of competition at the Razorback Invitational Friday at the Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Complex.

The relay comprised of Tony Clement, Zach Dawson, Brayon Brown and Rob Sorrell also bested the NCAA provisional qualifying mark by more than three seconds as it finished second to host Arkansas (9:38.37).

Brown and Sorrell were also members of the relay that posted the previous high. With Friday’s time, the top four men’s distance medley relay times at OU have all come the last two seasons under third-year coach Martin Smith.

For the second straight meet Katherine Johnson finished tied for second in the high jump. Johnson’s best jump of 5 feet and 6 inches (1.68 meters) tied Brianna Steel of Tulsa, two inches behind champion Brittani Carter of LSU.

Latoya Heath and Dominique Jacobs both improved their marks in the long jump with finishes of third and seventh, respectivly. Heath posted a personal record of 19-6.25 (5.95) while Jacobs finished with 19-2.50 (5.85).

In his first action of the season, four time NCAA All-American Chip Heuser took fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 16-6.75 (5.05).

In the men’s high jump, Paul Gill finished fourth with 6-8.75 (2.05). Kevin Snyder recorded the same height, but finished sixth after a miss at a previous height.

Leslie Cole set an indoor personal record in the 200 with a time of 24.12, good for eighth.

Senior Mitch Henry is second in the heptathlon with 2,943 points after the completion of four of the seven events. Henry is just 25 points behind leader Aaron Harlan of Stephen F. Austin after recording personal bests in the 60-meter dash (7.30), shot (42-10.75/13.07) and high jump (6-2.75/1.90).
