Men’s hoops: Griffin snags Big 12 weekly honor

By Scott Wright

One game was enough.

Blake Griffin’s 17-point, 15-rebound performance against Baylor Saturday afternoon was enough to get the Sooner freshman Big 12 Conference co-player of the week honors. He shared the honor with Baylor guard Curtis Jerrells, who averaged 26.5 points over two games last week.

Jerrells scored 11 of his career-high 36 points in the final overtime of Baylor’s five-OT win at Texas A&M last Wednesday. Kansas State’s Michael Beasley was named rookie of the week. It’s the second time he and Griffin have both been honored in the same week. But last time — Jan. 14, after Beasley scored 32 and Griffin 27 in their head-to-head matchup — Beasley was player of the week and Griffin claimed the rookie honor.

Here’s what the Big 12 Conference news release said about Griffin Monday:

“Griffin returned from a left knee injury two weeks earlier than expected to lead the Sooners to the win at Baylor in OU’s only game of the week.  The freshman forward scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play off the bench against the Bears.  He was 8-of-17 (.471) from the field with three assists and no turnovers.  He netted 15 of his points after halftime, including four straight points with less than two minutes remaining after BU had erased a 16-point deficit.  Griffin is averaging a double-double in Big 12 games (14.7 points, 10.0 rebounds) this season.”
