Men’s hoops: Bracketology talk

By Scott Wright

The Sooner hoopsters gained 24 points in the Associated Press poll today, though they’ve still got some work to do before we see them in the rankings.  They came in as the 10th team among “others receiving votes” today.

However, in other respects, the challenge doesn’t appear so great. OU’s RPI — a key factor used by the selection committee in determining NCAA Tournament teams — is at 24. If OU can maintain that type of RPI throughout the rest of the season, it will be in good shape.

In his projected bracket, Jerry Palm of CollegeRPI.com has the Sooners as a No. 6 seed playing South Alabama in Little Rock, Ark., which would be the ideal location for Sooner fans. There are a few other centrally located first-round destinations, but none as close as Little Rock. Others are Houston, Denver, Birmingham, Phoenix and Detroit. After that, you’re headed to one of the coasts.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has the Sooners as a No. 9 seed facing Purdue, also in Little Rock.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline had OU as one of his “last four in” the Tournament, meaning he has the Sooners at about a 12 seed.  But that bracket was done Jan. 23, three days before Blake Griffin’s magnificent return. Today, Parrish has the Sooners ranked No. 21 in his Top 25 (and one) poll.

Brad Evans of Yahoo! (you have to write it that way, even if you’re not excited when you say it) has OU slotted as a No. 7 seed and climbing, saying that the Sooners are “better than you might think.”

Of course, all of this stuff is relative. Should the Sooners drop a home game to Oklahoma State tonight, they’re back on the outside looking in.
