Men’s hoops: Bears and Ags go five OTs

By Scott Wright

Baylor 116, Texas A&M 110, five overtimes.

Think the Bears will be a little tired Saturday when OU visits? I’m tired after just reading the box score. They had four players play at least 42 minutes and Curtis Jerrells played 53.

For your enjoyment (though I recommend a water break halfway through) I’ve attached the list of Big 12 Conference records broken in the five-OT thriller — and I use the word “thriller” loosely. Sure, five overtimes is darn exciting, but there was some ugly basketball being played at Reed Arena Wednesday night, too.

Neither team shot better than 38 percent from the floor or 21 percent from 3-point range. Baylor was 7-of-34 from 3 and that was BETTER than the Aggies.

One note that caught my eye — A&M set the Big 12 record for free throw attempts in a game, but Baylor set the record for made free throws in a game.

Remember your high school coach always telling you how important it was to make your free throws? That’s got to be on Mark Turgeon’s mind today. Texas A&M was 36 of 59 at the free throw line.

Here are the record notes:

The Baylor at Texas A&M contest on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 was the first time in 196 meetings between the two schools that BOTH were nationally-ranked when the game was played. The series now stands with Texas A&M holding a 124-72 advantage
