I agree with Steve. If you put the QB under pressure the receivers do not have time for deep routes. DB’s can then press the receivers. If the pressue on the QB is not too great and receivers slip by that is where the safetie need to step up. I got pretty tired of watching the defense getting eaten up by the short pass and getting 3rd and short. Press the receivers and do not make the short pass so easy. One part I did like last year was that the DB’s were making sure tackles so receivers did not get to run much after the catch.

It’s a tough deal to look back at when we expected so much from that defense. I have respect for Bill Young but I also think he could have pulled the trigger and taken a few more chances especially in the OU game. The guys are going to have to play more aggressively for the Pokes to be considered in the top 10. They had OU by the throat and let them back in the game. I think that’s what turned Gundy off with Bill Young. When you have an offense like last year and this next year for sure, there’s no excuse for that to happen.

The reality is, Bill Young is now demonized among all the armchairs because he went with the flow of those with Recruiting Star twinkles in their eye’s and those selling tickets as they hyped his players into something that they were not…

that and the fact that when reality set in, he took the heat upon himself rather than throwing his players under the bus.

The OSU fans who knew better’s (the same one’s that now trash Bill Young) rap against Jacob Lacey who went on to be on the 1st Team All NFL Rookie team:

“He plays great close coverage on the short yardage stuff but he occasionally got beat deep and gave up too many big play touchdowns.”

If every time you try putting your corners up on the line for close coverage they get beat deep…

The suggestion that Bill Young played his corners off the line as a matter of philosophy rather than as a reaction to the realities of the corners that he had is as presumptuous as the notion that Spencer won’t have to follow suit.

If your QB is Jim Trabor instead of Brandon Weeden, guess what… you’re not going to throw the ball as much.

The compulsion to regardless demonize departed coaches is distasteful to say the least.

The Achilles heel. Spencer I expect will no doubt have the CB’s play tigh instead of the cushion philosophy…bend but not break under Young. Perhaps the line and linebacker play will make up for a lot too by putting more pressure on the QB and backers being able to provide some coverage. Still the CB’s need to step up. If they do OSU will have a dynamite season. It not it will wind up in many games to be an offensive battle.
