Gina, thanks for your explanation but I still believe he meant Kyle. Your quote from Gundy says, "I have all the respect that there is for the NFL coaches and the Kyle Shanahans..." It is clear that Gundy is talking about NFL coaches AND "Kyle Shanahans," which I interpret as those innovative coordinators who are not head coaches (i.e., do not belong to the former category of NFL coaches). It makes less sense for Gundy to say NFL coaches AND Mike Shanahans, since Mike Shanahan is a head coach and would be implicit to the former category.

I wasn't there, so I'll take your word for it. However, the way you quoted Gundy, it makes perfect sense for him to be referring to Kyle Shanahan, not Mike.

No big deal, and I appreciate your thoughtful reply.

Mike was talking about Kyle Shanahan, not Mike Shanahan. Kyle designed the offense around RGIII and created the game plan to neutralize DeMarcus Ware. While Mike Shanahan manages the team as the Head Coach, Kyle runs the offense as the OC.

<em>John,

I'm well aware of the responsibilities of a head coach and offensive coordinator. The way I interpreted it when I first listened to it is that Gundy was really trying to come up an old-school coach's name (in this case, Mike Shanahan) to connect to his first sentence of his answer that mentions that 4-5 years ago, the general thought was that college offenses wouldn't work in the NFL. But Brando referenced RG3 and the Redskins in the question, so I think Kyle Shanahan's name popped into Gundy's head, even though he's actually an example of a forward-thinking coach who's found a way to make a college-style offense work. I could have misinterpreted, but Gundy first points out that NFL coaches used to reject the idea that college offenses could work in the pros...then moves on to the Redskins and why it can. Kyle Shanahan's name doesn't fit with an old-school coach's mindset that Gundy is originally talking about. Those first couple sentences, Gundy honestly kind of lost his train of thought and was babbling, so maybe he had really meant Kyle Shanahan but hadn't successfully transitioned from his "they used to think this wouldn't work" point to his example of a college offense that does work in the NFL.

Gundy made some great 'plugs' for Weeden!!! In a round about way he told Cleveland that they just need a coach that can implement an offense which highlights Weeden's strength..........and just "get him out there and don't mess it up". Good Stuff!

I like Gundy more and more. He showed his immaturity when he was 40...the whole sports world knows that. It's no coincidence that OSU football's success has grown step by step with Gundy's maturity. I don't hold it against him that he took a look at Tenn and Ark. Sometimes a man has to take a look, just to remind him that's he is in the right place.

OSU will be a top 10 team next year. Texas, OU, Kansas State...watch out.
