It's the uninformed like you, Phil that make life interesting. If a Southern Miss coach decided to take a job at OSU I would wish him well because he would be working for a class act coach in Mike Gundy. Instead, you have to run Southern Miss down for no apparent reason except lack of knowledge about Golden Eagle football. Do a little research, Phil, and you'll find that few programs know more about winning on a consistent basis (18 consecutive winning seasons)than Southern Miss. We're also very familiar with being ranked in the BCS, and going to bowl games every year. With Coach Johnson we had a minor hickup that no one ever thought would end. With coach Monken, hopefully, Southern Miss gets the right guy to come in and restore the tradition that Golden Eagle fans have grown accustomed to. I wish OSU nothing but the best in their bowl game and next year. I've always had tremendous respect for their program, especially since 3 of our last 4 head coaches were OC's there (Bower, Fedora, and Monken). As for Southern Miss, my only wish is that Coach Monken will be successful and that he will stay long enough to help us to get over the BCS hump.

Another stepping stone coach like Fedora? USM needs a real leader, not someone who wants to coach for a year or two, get the program going and leave for a bigger school.
We have available one of our own, a guy who bleeds pigskin...Favre know more about football than guys like Monken will ever know. Hire Brett and he will instantly restore our recruiting capabilities and regain national attention. I think USM is cursed with AD's who fire legends like Bower and pass on leaders like Favre.

I hope Monken stays at O.S.U. at least for another year. All he has to do is be patient. Nothing out there looks that good especially the Southern Mississippi job. If I were Monken the good old Oklahoma State head coaching job may come back up next year, and that would be a job worth waiting on. Who in their right mind would want to go to Texas Tech, Southern Mississippi, or Louisiana Tech. Monken has it pretty good right now as simply the offensive coordinator. The recruiting class that is coming in this year plus what is already present as far as talent on the team, to me this is a no brainer. Ya Stay! It would be great to see Monken reap the benefits of another Big 12 Championship. Then he will have an even greater opportunity to get a very good Division One job at a well known school with the resume he has built/established in just a short period of time.
Just to change the subject a little it sounds like to me the Oklahoman Newspaper would love nothing more than to see Monken go. Why would this newspaper speculate as much as they do about Oklahoma State Football? It is going to be fun knocking O.U. off next year. Hopefully Monken will be here. Go Pokes!

<em>Phil,

To touch on your last point: The Oklahoman doesn't "want" anything to happen. Monken, in fact, is/was a pleasure to work with as a reporter because he is honest, open and candid -- something that is rare in a world of coach speak, secrecy and vanilla interviews. In that regard, he will be sorely missed by the media folks here. And there's no speculation here. We report the information we get from people who know what's going on during the coaching search process.

If this is in fact the case, THANK YOU OSU!!!!! To put it in Deep South Redneck "vernacular" (meaning helping you understand how we "tawk" down here: You ain't never done us wrong!!!!!! By the way, Jeff Bower and I are friends, and although he had Southern Miss roots, his passage through Stillwater did him nothing but good. Both Bower and Fedora had tons of character, which I think is an necessity at a head coaching (or really any other college coaching position--if it's done right. That, in and of itself, is a VERY positive refelction on OSU athletics in general. Like I said, if this is, in fact true we owe you OSU!!!!! GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!

Whether we end up with Monken or not, here's wishing you a bowl win, a great recruiting season and an even better year on the field next year from a truly dedicated Southern Miss fan and an OSU Cowboy fan--who is becoming more and more enthusiastic in that regard. By the way, as an attorney, I often work with an OU grad who often travels all the way from Hattiesburg to see OU home games. You have to admire his dedication, but it sure would be great if you guys could give me a present: Beat OU convincingly next year. If you do, I'll buy an extra five pounds of salt to rub in my friend's wounds. And thoroughly enjoy doing it.
