A lot of the statements in this article are either incorrect or incomplete. First, it is virtually impossible to prove anything about a very fast-moving baseball play from a still photo. A photo can be very deceiving. Second, just because the Mizzou pitcher stepped on the OSU runner's hand does not necessarily mean that the hand was on the base first. The front part of the pitcher's foot could've touched the base before the runner's hand did. Third, on a typical throw-catch play at 1st base, umpires normally *look* at the foot on the base and *listen for* the ball hitting the glove. If a pitcher is running toward 1st and catching a throw at the same time, that complicates the call even more.

I didn't see the play or the game. You might be right--Morris may have missed the call. But none of the "evidence" cited in this article proves it.

Another DA Tex'ass'n like that bunch of Football officials that called the TT-OU game in '07. Remember, you can always park in handicap spots with Texas tags on your car.

I don't buy it about the glove-bag thing. That's probably a great observation about about a more routine type of play. But the play in question was anything but routine.

If there is a potential tag out, the umpire's supposed to watch for that too, right ? And that to me the possibility of a tag out was part of that play.

If you just watch the play at all it wasn't that hard to tell the runner was safe. I was really surprised when Umpire Morris (not Winters as originally reported, glad to know that) called Duren out when it was seemed pretty obvious he was safe.

I'm not buying your theory at all about why we should cut umpire Morris slack on this particular call. It wasn't that kind of play where you would have to give an umpire that much slack. At best he definitely failed at his job. At worst it was something worse than just that. Especially I guess since from what I read he went and did the same kind of the thing to OU too - kind of helps it all be moreso as intriguing as it deserves to be.

If I'm being too severe I would hate that. Just can't see that I am being though and think you might have been trying too hard to come up with a reason to give this umpire too much benefit of a doubt.
