Dez may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but he is a superior athlete, and deservedly will have an opportunity to become a star in the NFL. Obviously, as is the case with many athletes, he didn't come from the best situation growing up. The NFL, and rightfully so, doesn't tolerate knuckleheads anymore because they don't have to. Dez is smart enough to know whats in front of him and what's behind him. He'll be on his best behavior because he simply has to to make it in the NFL. Now somewhere down the road when the money comes rolling in Dez might mess up. A leopard doesn't change it's spots. If he were Jesus, he'd already have been nailed to the cross!

Where is the logic.
Dez Bryant is accused of being late. How many people has Mike Gundy kicked off his team. If he was such a problem do you think he would have lasted. Prentiss Elliot didnt and he might have had just as much talent as Dez. They said he was 30 minutes late for a game. How are you late when the team stays at the student union hotel and makes the walk two hours before the game. Did he not take the bus from the hotel on an away game? He forgot his shoes to a workout. Truth, he brought five pairs of shoes but didnt bring his favorite. The NCAA entrapped him when he was scared of what he thought was a violation and lied about it so they nailed him for lying. If you look back with Bradford hurt and the other quarterbacks not having good seasons Dez with a couple of TD returns and big recieving numbers might have won the Heisman. One thing Gundy has been consistant in not putting up with violation of team rules. Think about how Dez could be such a troublemaker under these conditions.

I wasn't there, so I don't know what they asked AP. But don't you think that could be just as relevant?

I'm curious what everyone thinks that thinks this question is so off limits...You're bringing a proven college talent into an unproven NFL. This person could create cash for the team by getting them to the playoffs, or could derail an organization. Not to mention you're committing millions to a person that you have little knowledge of -- who may not be able to handle the stress, who may have character flaws, who may not commit in the end. So, how would you handle this situation? Do you throw a dart at a dart board to find the person you want? Do you just look at stats and hope it transfers? Do you cross your fingers?

The bottom line is it's a business. They want security in their investment. I can't believe that everyone thinks there's some sort of sacred part of someone's life that is considered off limits because it may make a player feel uncomfortable before they can cash in and be an overnight multi-millionaire.

I dont think they asked Adrian Peterson about his dad being in jail...not that would make any difference...didnt AP drive a car for a month(hardly investigated by NCAA)overlooked by the NCAA -a character issue?

It wasn't a job interview...it's an interview to find out more about someone. It's basically like a journalist trying to find out about someone for a story. It's like recruiters talking to potential players in any sport in any league. Would most people ask this question? No. Would I? No.

You guys are all comparing this to working at McDonalds or some place where a company could afford dropping a couple thousand in salary for a month or two and cutting someone who doesn't work out, to a commitment of several years for several millions...it's not the same. Franchieses can get killed for bad decisions. Just like the testing someone who might be a lawyer and part partner in a firm is probably more stringent than the typical: Where do you see yourself in 5 years question. For big positions and big commitments you have to dig deeper. Rules are different for the elite, those in entertainment and otherwise, it's not the same as any of us.

What's funny though, is no one would be angry if they asked if his mother was an alcoholic, or if his mother collected flowers...both are just as legitimate questions, but wouldn't seem as offensive.

And if Mike Golic would have punched him in the mouth...Mike Golic would never have played in the NFL.

I'm not saying what he did was right, but in a situation like this anything is on the table.

Way out of bounds. No wonder the Phins (havent read the article but heard on radio it was the Phins) are medicore at best right now. What a low class question. People only get asked those questions for security reasons would be my guess. I dont think playing in the NFL is a high security job. Hope Dez burns the Phins when they play.

That fact that this question is even debatable is RIDICULOUS!!! The explanation most commonly voiced in defense of asking this question is that a big company betting a large portion of their future on one employee, so any question is fair game excludes one vital piece of information. To ask a question like this one to Dez is ILLEGAL. If you make the comparison to other companies the the same standards or LAWS that other companies must follow in their interview process should be followed by these NFL businesses as well. It's pathetic, and I really hope that the Human Resources department does a little bit of ethics and interview training with Mr. Ireland.
