When you are not in the ranks of the super elite you sometimes have to take risks and overlook some things that the super elite do not. That is of course if you agree that OSU is not among the super elite of college football. You take the super athletic kid who may have a character flaw or past troubles that schools higher in the pecking order may not. Or you give the kid who is head and shoulders better than anyone else at the position one more last chance than you would if there were 3 or 4 others who are nearly as good. Besides that it is the nature of coaches to think that “hey, if I give this kid proper guidance for the first time in his life he can make something out of himself.” Coaches are remarkably good at it but sometimes they like all of us fail. Just look at what happened in Norman in basketball for a pretty decent analog. By all accounts prior to this year everyone thought that Capel was not just a good basketball coach but a great molder of men. How quickly it can all change.

Hanging with the likes of Deion Sanders, Eugene Parker, and Pacman Jones will certainly raise some eyebrows.

With that said, I think he is a good kid with a good heart. He just needs the right people around him to guide him in the right direction. Unfortunately, I don’t think the people he currently has at his side are those rolemodels needed.

Do you think Coach Gundy would have put up with being late to meetings and even games? Absolutely not. He hasn’t ever beat up a girlfriend, been arrested for pot or alcohol or stolen anything. So the team that “takes a chance” on Dez will get a player that decided he wanted to play college football and made that happen. Good luck, Dez. I’ll be cheering for you every Sunday.
