OSU 36, Texas A&M 31: Thoughts and Observations
by Brandon Chatmon

— I had NO IDEA what to expect from the Cowboys today. This week was full of so much uncertainity and strife. They should me A LOT with their effort today. I’m not saying Texas A&M is a great team or anything like that, what I am saying is that the Pokes VERY EASILY could have came out and had the type of game were they beat themselves. But they didn’t.
—Nobody can question OSU’s mental toughness after what they did today.
—Zac Robinson and the coaching staff had always said, “If we can throw it to Dez, we are going to throw it to Dez” as well they should. But what today showed is that the Pokes do have other playmakers at the receiver position and Zac has the confidence in that group to throw them the ball.
—Offensive line coach Joe Wickline seems happy with the current five on the offensive front. Saturday’s fourth quarter showed why. Simply dominant.
—It was a interesting game which I felt the Cowboys could have won a lot easier by and bigger margin. At one point in the first half if seemed like OSU should have been up 17-0 but they only held a 7-0 lead. Miscues, mistakes and penalties kept this thing from getting out of hand in the Pokes favor.
—I think this game showed how much better OSU is in coverage. There were several times Jerrod Johnson had time but couldn’t find a receiver.
—Four sacks for OSU? It was the same pass rush they’ve had all year, they just actually got Johnson on the ground today. That said, it’s hard to get too excited because Johnson was VERY indecisive at times and looked to make the big play more often than make the right one.
—Kendall Hunter might want to get back ASAP. The offensive line is coming together and Toston is getting comfortable with carrying the workload of a No. 1 running back.
—I think OSU should look to get Tracy Moore involved more. He just seems to have the look of a playmaker. He’s got “Big paws on a puppy”
—Today’s game showed how helpful it is to have four quality safeties. The Cowboys often subbed in two FRESH safeties on third downs, almost like how you sub in pass rush specialists up front.
—Donald Booker just makes plays. EVERY GAME. It’s hard to beleive he was slated to be a backup. That just shows how good Orie Lemon is and how big a loss that was.
—Richetti Jones is emerging into the player he was expected to be out of high school. I’ll admit, I was unsure about the good signs he was showing against Rice and Grambling State, because I kept thinking, “Hey it’s against Rice and Grambling State.” But Richetti did it today against Big 12 competition, recording 1.5 sacks.
—Lane Taylor has a nasty streak in him. There were multiple times I looked up and he had driven his defender 10 yards downfield. That young man may be something special some day.
—I think the fourth quarter, especially the 16 play, 93 yard drive showed why Zac Robinson is special. A lot of people get caught up in stats or the occasional bad throw…” Zac didn’t do this, Zac didn’t do that”. That drive showed why you want Zac Robinson on your football team. Two clutch third down throws, one to Hubert Anyiam, one to Dameron Fooks. And his pass which Fooks dropped was a great read which would have been a touchdown. On that drive, OSU walked onto the field with their backs against their own end zone and the crowd getting louder by the second. And they promptly marched down the field.
—Let’s not get it twisted, OSU DOES miss Kendall Hunter and Dez Bryant. They just proved they don’t HAVE to have those guys to be successful.

Just caught Mike Gundy on the pre-game broadcast with Dave Hunziker.
Gundy addressed the Dez Bryant situation and the affect it could have on the Cowboys today.
“Been an interesting week, to say the least,” Gundy said. “As a coaching staff, especially being the head coach, the weight falls on my shoulders to make sure the team is in great spirits.”
Gundy acknowledged the initial shock.
“There was a state of shock at a certain time,” he said. “A player who’s been involved with our organization, Dez is a unique personality, but he’s a good kid at heart.
“People have always grown accustomed to liking him. Same with the team.”
Now he’s gone, at least temporarily.
“When we found out this fell on him, there was the state of shock,” Gundy said. “But we had a team meeting and were very up front with the players. We told them the truth. Mistakes were made.
“We’re in a reinstatement phase for the team and with Dez Bryant. I think it’s important people realize we have done everything we can and should do. Our football team has practiced very well the last couple of days.
“Offensively, the question comes up all the time, ‘How are you going to score points?’
“We’re going to run our offense.”
And we’re minutes away from finding out how well the offense runs without Bryant.

OSU overrated? Some think so… others don’t
by Brandon Chatmon
bchatmon@opubco.com
Oklahoma State came into the season with tons of national hype and attention. After four games, national opinions of the Cowboys vary greatly. Some consider them a big disappointment, largely thanks to Houston’s double-digit loss to UTEP. While others consider OSU right behind Texas in terms of the top teams in the Big 12 conference.
Here are some links to the varied opinions:
The L.A. Times’ Chris Dufresne calls the Cowboys one of five overrated teams in the country in his column.
And Collegefootballnews.com’s Peter Fiutak thinks OSU is one of six disappointing teams this season, largely due to the Cowboys struggles offensively.
Meanwhile ESPN.com’s Tim Griffin has the Cowboys No. 2 in his Big 12 power poll.
It just goes to show you how varied opinions are about the Cowboys. So let the games begin!!
