Connecting the dots…

So, ran across an interesting story today.

By now you’ve read that OSU baseball player Dylan Brown intends to join the football team. Brown was an all-state wide receiver in high school in Florida. And let’s not kid ourselves, OSU needs all the options at wide receiver they can get.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about Brown, who I know very little about, is who his high school quarterback was.

Anyone care to take a guess?

Anyone?

That’s right, Robert Marve, the former Miami quarterback that’s looking for a new home and OSU just happens to be at the top of his short list.  Marve told ESPN that he and Brown have talked but that the QB wasn’t going to pick a school just based on having a buddy there.

Marve also told ESPN that he’s been working out and throwing to Seattle Seahawks WR Logan Payne, a former University of Minnesota player who lives near him.

Scott-Do you think OSU really wants/needs Robert Marve? From what little attention I paid to his saga, it sounds like he really didn’t look that great at UM and I believe he comes with some baggage. If I recall, it seems he had a bit of a reputation as not being a team player and has a meddlesome father. Also, isn’t he more of a pro-style QB as opposed to the dual-threat QB that Coach Gundy and staff seem to prefer?

Since Marve would not be available to play until the 2010 season, there looks to be plenty of competition to be Zac’s replacement that year. In addition to Cate and Weedon, there will be Clint Chelf with a year under his belt, Johnny Deaton (if his comittment holds) with a Spring practice in the program, and Nathan Sorenson (if commitment holds). Other than a few games’ experience, what does Marve offer that none of these guys do?

Brown does not appear to have an avenue to play on the football team . . . oh wait, you told jus that it was Cole that had no avenue.

No, can’t be Cole because the Tulsa World reported last week that Gundy said Cole COULD work his way back on to the team.

Scott, you should read the Tulsa World in addition to ESPN to get your OSU news.

JB, thanks for your comments, but I don’t get my OSU news from the Tulsa World, ESPN or any other news organization. I get it from sources in and around the program whom I trust.

That’s the case with the news I reported on Cole, and I stand by my report. Maybe my information will end up being wrong and Cole will play for OSU again.

Of course, Mike Gundy, like many coaches, also knows how to use the media to speak to his players. We’ll see what happens with Cole (the ones currently on the roster).

To answer Patrick’s question: No, I don’t think the Cowboys are interested in Marve any longer. I believe they are perfectly satisfied with the group of players who will be competing to replace Zac Robinson in 2010 — as you said, assuming Deaton and Sorenson stay true to their commitments.

Thanks,
Scott
